It was a little surreal to be reminded recently that my first album, Paradigm Shift, was released 25 years ago this month (July 2001). Recorded through much of my early 20’s (in my bedroom). First release for @Loopcrew. Released in the UK a year later.

The opening intro track was written the same evening I saw the Russian space station MIR pass low over Wellington just before breaking up and ditching into the Pacific Ocean.

Hearing it again felt less like reminiscing and more like opening a time capsule: a snapshot of who I was as a young artist just starting out, trying to find my feet and my own voice, with absolutely no idea where any of it might lead.

An album I'd avoided listening to for many years, for one reason or another, but I revisited it recently. It's a curious blend of trip-hop atmospheres, spacey electronica, acoustic guitar meanderings - perhaps a little naive in its production, but genuine in its creative intent.

From memory, I think it only had 8 or so audio tracks to work with, so I was constantly bouncing tracks down and committing to production decisions much earlier than I otherwise would have.

I recorded the album over much of my early twenties. I was very green at the time, and had some fairly limited recording gear. I recorded and produced most of it myself in my bedroom predominantly on a free piece of basic audio software.

I played some shows in the UK and Germany around the release. Garden Children featured on Café del Mar 10 (when people still bought CDs), and US R&B artist Kehlani even sampled the track Waiting (co-written with Lotus) on her Billboard Top 10 album SweetSexySavage album in 2017.

The album was the very first release on Loop Recordings (now one of New Zealand’s biggest independent labels). It went on to receive a UK release a year or two later and was fortunate enough to receive some very generous praise from publications such as Future Music.

Traces is currently No.1 on the independent NZ Album charts, and No.2 on the Official Top 20 Aotearoa Album charts. Not too bad for an experimental minimalist instrumental post-rock ambient album. A BIG thank you to all who have been listening and made it along to our shows. 🙏🏼
