What is the intersection of machine learning, causal inference, and economics?
What are promising avenues for research at this intersection?
I just drafted a new talk exploring these questions:

Thoughts and comments welcome!
Industrial Policy has been 'too hard' to study econometrically. This is bc of multiple equilibria -- we don't know if the world we observe *has to* be that way, or if its in one of several equilibria. Tishara Garg's phenomenal JMP solves this. It's revolutionary for IP research.
⚡️@RumanaHuque challenges Big Tobacco in Bangladesh, where 35.3% people use tobacco. Her research reveals tobacco taxes don't cover healthcare costs of smoking-related illness 'They must decide for the bigger interest—public health.' #IWD2025 https://t.co/YZVlDczC09

The struggle to address climate change & social inclusion will be short and long term. We always need to keep both in mind, especially now in a time of regress with Trump. World Trade Review just published my take on trade policy in the long term regarding these issues,

I have been thinking recently of closing my X account anyway, because I want to write more papers and articles. X made the decision for me. For those who are interested, I will now post only on the blue system. See you there.

I tried last night to solve this from Beijing, and it didn't work. Tonight I happen to be in Hong Kong, where it also doesn't work.
I apologize to my friends and followers, but unfortunately I am not committed enough to X to make much more of an effort to solve this problem.

X tells me that unless I appeal immediately, my account will be closed. I did try, but not only will X not allow me to see the offending posts, which makes it hard to argue see what the problem might be, but their system is so clunky that the appeal process won't register.

I was told yesterday by X that someone wants my account closed because I’ve posted pictures that belong to them without correct attribution. This is absurd because the only pictures I ever post are ones that I have taken myself.
When tariffs are moderate and are used to complement a domestic investment agenda, they need not cause much harm, observes @rodrikdani. On the other hand, @realDonaldTrump's tariffs are likely to stand – and fail – on their own. https://t.co/EUCejpbi28
Tariffs are neither a Swiss Army knife for domestic problems nor an effective stick to discipline other nations (as Trump believes). But they can be useful as a shield allowing other (social, environmental, industrial) policies to do their work. My latest https://t.co/7XmAYTvPme
