@StaggerUnwinds@Jamesmolesruns They distorted the already less than perfect handicap system as well, especially as that has a built-in recency bias and it's quite easy to keep stacking half-decent parkrun efforts among a field where not everyone is racing.
@Jamesmolesruns@StaggerUnwinds to be fair, they don't go down as a 5k. You can't set an official 5k PB in a parkrun, whether it's accurately measured or not. The bigger issues would be mixed messages about what parkrun is, and timing inaccuracies. No chip times, no qualified timing officials.
@TomasKnedlik@kineticquant@DavidDack Do find it annoying that running is the one sport where it seems ‘okay’ to redefine the activity itself. Running is a clearly defined thing - both feet must be off the ground at some point in each stride or you’re simply not running! Some ‘slow runners’ are in fact walkers.
@TomasKnedlik@kineticquant@DavidDack Agreed. I would find it patronising if someone said the weights I can lift are “impressive” and put me on the same level as someone who trains lifting heavy weights. It’s okay to recognise there are levels in all things, and while some are objectively impressive, others are not.
@kineticquant@TomasKnedlik@DavidDack Of course, if it was once beyond a person who then achieves it, and they feel impressed, they should enjoy that feeling. But if doesn't redefine what is objectively impressive. I'm happy to bicep curl a very modest weight, but it's not impressive, even if it's 'good for me'
@kineticquant@TomasKnedlik@DavidDack The fact that a percentage of the population are too unfit to walk a mile does not make walking a mile an impressive feat. I understand the element of subjectivity, but it's useful to have objective measures. Walking one mile is not objectively impressive.
@kineticquant@TomasKnedlik@DavidDack Where are we drawing the line here? Is a 20-minute mile ‘impressive’? I think we can be inclusive and non-hateful without describing fairly basic physical undertakings as ‘impressive’. Describing vastly different levels of athletic performance as basically the same is not helpful
Awesome experience at the Edinburgh Marathon. Delighted with a top-10 finish and can’t grumble at the time in tough conditions. London 2026 here we come 🐢
@runningjo10k I thought more people would be talking about this. It's going to have caught a few out. Some people may have jogged a marathon just for the experience (or even just had a bad day) but nailed a HM and thought they had it in the bag, only to be told it's now not valid!
Enjoyed speaking to Neil Thompson at length following his exit from Sheffield Wednesday after nearly 15 years.
He spoke about being a grandad, Alpine cycling, pride, anguish and why he left.

"I’ll miss it, but I’m ready for the next chapter. I just hope my experience has helped along the way."
We caught up with Neil Thompson, who reflects on his near 15-year stint with the Owls 🦉
