Senate Bill 341 would have raised the legal minimum marriage age to 18 with no exceptions—a commonsense safeguard to protect vulnerable young people from this sort of exploitation and abuse.

Instead of standing with Ohio's children, Vivek’s second in command stalled the bill.

Thank you for writing about the connection of these abuse cases with the loophole in Ohio law that continues to allow teen marriage. There are actually two proposed bipartisan bills that will close this:
SB341 mentioned and a companion HB670. This remains unaddressed because current LG candidate and Senate President Rob McColley refused to move it forward, not a lack of bipartisan support by members.

I fully support Gov. DeWine’s decision to veto HB472, which would have created unnecessary barriers to mail-in voting for eligible voters and unfunded mandates for both our County Boards of Elections and the SOS’s office. Ohio’s existing mail-in voting process is secure and has worked very well for thousands of Ohioans during every election cycle. As I noted during my floor speech opposing this legislation, this bill was rushed, half-baked, and did absolutely nothing to secure Ohio’s elections.

Our neighbors up north and in other states are protecting the privacy of their voters, and this latest decision by the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals affirms the right of states to do so. Yet, here in Ohio after more than two months of asking for transparency, we can’t even get clarity about what non-public voting data our Secretary of State actually provided to the DOJ. I won’t be backing down on this issue until I get answers for the 8 million Ohioans who had their personal data handed over.

At a moment when our democracy demands vigilance and inclusion, this Court’s Republican-appointed majority has chosen instead to erode the very safeguards designed to ensure fair representation. In doing so, it cements a legacy that may rank among the most hostile to voting rights in over a century.

The weakening of the Voting Rights Act is not a technical adjustment—it is a profound betrayal of the democratic promise. It undermines decades of hard-fought progress and signals to millions of Americans that their voices can be diminished or disregarded. A healthy democracy depends on equal access to the ballot and fair representation in the halls of power. By chipping away at these protections, the Court risks tipping that balance further away from equity and justice.

Maybe instead of spreading more disinformation about the “dirty” voter rolls you’ve had the primary responsibility for maintaining for the last 8 years, you can share with the public exactly what voter information was recently shared with federal entities and any use agreements you entered into with those entities in exchange for voter data not publicly available. Ohioans deserve that transparency, which is exactly what my bill requires.
