ECA Club owners agree on key strategic decisions

Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA) Shareholder Clubs met on Tuesday, October 6, in Cernobbio, Italy, to discuss and align on key strategic decisions regarding the future of their collective property.

Euroleague Basketball President Dejan Bodiroga welcomed the attendees and highlighted the work carried out by the clubs over the past decades, which has driven unprecedented growth, interest and momentum for European club basketball.

The meeting continued with a presentation by Euroleague Basketball CEO Chus Bueno, who provided an update on the progress made against the approved strategic roadmap and the 10-year business plan, as well as on key strategic priorities. These included the proposed conversion of the current 10-year licenses held by the thirteen shareholder clubs into franchises, and expansion opportunities arising from multiple binding offers received from leading professional clubs.

- Franchise Transformation

The attending club owners agreed to move forward with the process of converting the current 10-year licenses into franchises for the thirteen ECA shareholder clubs: Anadolu Efes Istanbul, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, CSKA Moscow, Armani Olimpia Milan, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, Fenerbahce Istanbul, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Olympiacos Piraeus, Panathinaikos Athens, Real Madrid and Zalgiris Kaunas.

- Franchise Expansion

The clubs agreed to continue the process to expand the number of franchises. Club owners appointed the Board of Directors to continue with the review process and present a final recommendation for approval in the upcoming weeks.

Angelopoulos brothers, Giannakopoulos among EuroLeague power brokers meeting in Como👀

COMO, Italy — The biggest power brokers in European basketball have gathered in Como as EuroLeague Basketball holds a key meeting with representatives of its shareholder clubs🤔

Olympiacos owners Giorgos and Panagiotis Angelopoulos and Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos are among the prominent figures attending Monday’s meeting, alongside senior executives from both organizations.

The Olympiacos delegation also includes Giorgos Skindilias and Nikos Lepeniotis, while Panathinaikos is represented by Vassilis Parthenopoulos and Margarita Thanou.

Several of the EuroLeague’s most influential clubs are represented at the meeting. Real Madrid has CEO and board member José Ángel Sánchez in attendance, while Barcelona is represented by president Joan Laporta. Other prominent representatives include Olimpia Milano president and owner Leo Dell’Orco, Maccabi Tel Aviv president and owner Shimon Mizrahi, Anadolu Efes honorary president and owner Tuncay Özilhan, CSKA Moscow president and owner Andrey Vatutin, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer, Baskonia president and owner José Antonio Querejeta, ASVEL president Tony Parker, Žalgiris Kaunas owner Paulius Motiejūnas and Fenerbahçe general manager Derya Yanier.

Despite recent speculation, the focus of the meeting is not expected to be a potential NBA expansion into Europe.

Instead, EuroLeague Basketball is presenting its long-term strategic plan, with a 10-year horizon, as the competition prepares for a major transformation under a new franchise-based model.

EuroLeague officials have also received 13 binding bids from teams interested in joining the competition through future expansion, with the combined value of those offers reportedly exceeding €800 million.

The NBA could come up in discussions, but it is not currently a priority on the agenda for EuroLeague Basketball or its shareholder clubs at this meeting.
