Victoria Jazz Kings Band 🇰🇪
Our next stop is Kenya, where bright guitar melodies and irresistible rhythms tell a story of their own.
This Saturday, Music of Africa with @ms_ndikumana explores the sounds of Victoria Jazz Kings Band, whose recordings offer a window into Kenya’s flourishing benga music scene of the 1970s.
Rooted in Luo musical traditions, benga brought interlocking electric guitars, driving bass lines, and lively rhythms to the dance floor. Victoria Jazz Kings Band’s catalogue forms part of this East African guitar-band heritage, with songs including Owino, Liza Oloo Mighty and Cham Luchi.
While much of the group’s personal history remains sparsely documented, its recordings continue to introduce listeners to this chapter of Kenyan popular music. What can those songs tell us about the musical world they came from?
Join us for Artist Appreciation as we listen closer and discover a band whose music has travelled further than its documented story.🌍

Imithente 🇿🇦
Our musical journey brings us home to South Africa, where Imithente helped make space for women’s voices in Maskandi.
This Saturday, Music of Africa with @ms_ndikumana explores the story of the group formed in Johannesburg in 1993 by guitarist Simosakhe Mthalane and vocalists Buselaphi Gxowa, Dumisile Manana, and Nokwazi Ntuli.
With roots in KwaZulu-Natal, Imithente brought powerful Zulu harmonies, intricate guitar melodies, and stories of everyday life into a genre traditionally dominated by men. Their name comes from a type of grass found in rural KwaZulu-Natal, connecting their identity to the landscape behind their music.
Their journey reached a milestone in 2009 when they became the first female group to win the South African Music Award for Best Maskandi Album.
Through Simqonda Ngqo, Isidikiselo, and Amanyala, we explore how Imithente turned cultural pride and women’s perspectives into a lasting musical legacy.
Join us for Artist Appreciation and discover the stories behind the harmonies.🌍

WHY ALGERIA? 🇩🇿
Our journey through Africa begins with a memory that reaches beyond its borders.
This Saturday, Music of Africa with @ms_ndikumana takes us to Algeria, whose history leads us to the streets of Paris on 17 October 1961. Algerians gathered peacefully to protest a discriminatory curfew. What followed was a brutal police crackdown that claimed lives and left families searching for answers.
The Paris Massacre of 1961 is a reminder that colonialism was not only fought on distant battlefields but also in the streets of European capitals. It underscores the dangers of state-sanctioned racism and the silencing of marginalized voices.
Remembering October 17, 1961, is not merely about honoring the dead; it is about confronting the legacies of colonial violence that continue to shape societies today.
We visit Algeria to remember those lives, reflect on this chapter of African history, and honour a story that endured decades of silence.
