Cold outside 🧊 but where are our cetaceans? 🐬🛩️ We are currently doing a winter SCANS survey in the southern North Sea. First time ever! First flight yesterday. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Summer 2022: 8 aircraft and one vessel surveying in 1.7 million square kilometres from the Strait of Gibraltar to southern Norway in summer 2022. Search effort of 75,000 km on transects, recording thousands of groups of cetaceans from 17 different species.

The SMRU aerial survey team conducts regular flights to monitor seal numbers during the harbour seal moult in August. These data help us estimate population size and trends. Today the team are in Plockton, ready to survey on Skye. Fingers crossed for clear skies over Skye! 🌞🚁🦭
