“I’m getting really disappointed… the regional format is - really concerning me if we’re talking about what’s best for student athletes.”
Auburn Coach Butch Thompson raises concern about the amount of starting pitchers that were coming back, throwing again, and totaling over 100 pitches during Regional weekend of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
⚠️ A rare opinion of mine that I will include in a press conference clip that I post 👇
So many new eyeballs are finding College Baseball’s postseason fascinating because of the Tournament format and all the chaos that we’ve seen over the past two years. I have no doubt that the ratings have boomed. I don’t know why you would try to fix what is not broken, then again they changed the NCAA Basketball Tournament too.
HOWEVER, Butch has a point with the usage of pitchers in a 3-game series vs playing 5 games in a weekend. This is the biggest/best argument you can make against the current NCAAT format. I am not a fan of change, but I’m willing to provide a platform for passionate individuals with incredibly illustrative thoughts on a new NCAA Tournament format that logically makes sense given the current academic calendar.

Teams that don’t strike out at a high clip win more games. Simple as that. This is amplified at the college level — and even more at the high school level and below.
Once you get to two strikes, it becomes a team at-bat. Grind it out. Compete your tail off. Choke up, shorten up, widen out, move closer to the plate — whatever helps you execute your two-strike approach. Some call it their “B swing.”
Make the pitcher work.
We preach “look fastball away and adjust,” but there are plenty of effective two-strike approaches. You have to experiment and find what fits your swing and mindset best.
A quality two-strike approach often leads to hard-hit balls. But even when it doesn’t, the defense still has to field it, throw it, and catch it. That’s pressure.
A lot tougher to defend than a right turn back to the dugout.

This is truly an all-sport problem. It's way past time for us to find a way to get the best 16 or 32 teams in for each sport and put more emphasis on performance than geography.
So in our baseball area, ASWA ranking has our 4 area teams: #4, 5, 6, & 7. The @PrepBaseballAL ranking: #4, 5, 7, & 9. That means some good baseball is ahead, but the sad truth is the way we do AHSAA playoffs in 7A in Alabama, 2 of these 4 teams won’t get a playoff opportunity!
Spain Park baseball rose up to No. 2 in the ASWA rankings while Briarwood baseball moved up, Helena softball and Thompson baseball and softball held and Shelby County and Vincent dropped.
