The opening of BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017) is among the most visually stunning sequences in science fiction.
That enormous orange landscape looks almost otherworldly, but Roger Deakins didn’t simply create the color in post. He and Denis Villeneuve built the look through extensive camera and lighting tests, using specially made filters, colored lighting and real locations to create that strange, dusty atmosphere in-camera.
Even the opening was assembled from different pieces of real photography and visual effects, including aerial footage shot high above Mexico City. Deakins wanted the world to feel futuristic but still grounded in places that could actually exist, drawing inspiration from real landscapes and environmental imagery.
And that’s what makes those first few minutes so powerful. Before the story has even properly begun, Villeneuve and Deakins have already made the future feel vast, lonely and strangely beautiful.

Today, we celebrate Muppet creator Jim Henson’s 90th birthday!
Jim Henson inspired the whimsy and heart central to all things muppet, reinventing the way we view monsters, puppetry, and a character's power to educate. Thank you Jim! ❤️
Today is #HobbitDay because Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were both born on September 22nd.
Normally we'd shire a hobbit pun or two but it might just feel like a tolkien gesture and we don't want to embarrass our elves.
Anyway it's a good day to come and boromir #Tolkien books. 📚
Before we had silicon chips, we had needle and thread.
In the 1960s, NASA didn’t ‘upload’ code; they sewed it.
To get Apollo 11 to the moon, skilled weavers (often called ‘Little Old Ladies’) literally hand-stitched software into physical objects.
One of my favorite bits in Shaun of the Dead (2004) is Shaun’s morning trip to the shop. 🧟♂️
Edgar Wright fills the background with signs that the zombie apocalypse is already underway, but Shaun is so locked into his daily routine that he barely notices anything around him.

The Thing (1982).
The blood test is still the greatest suspense scene in cinema.
MacReady has the flamethrower and a hot wire. The others are tied down. He tests them one at a time. Nobody has a result waiting in front of them. They just have to sit there and watch him come closer....
That is the engine of it. You are not watching the monster yet. You are watching a room full of men trying not to blink. He works down the line. Nothing happens.
The silence gets heavier with every pass. Then he hits Palmer, and the blood jumps out of the dish like it wants to live!
The room collapses in two seconds. Carpenter lets the wait do the damage first, then he pays it off. Over forty years later it still holds.
