But 1,925 students decided differently in 2025.

They didn't just talk about ideas. They changed laws, built businesses, organized in war zones.

If the cause of the Ethiopian famine had been a right-wing regime, it would probably be in every school curriculum alongside Live Aid.

The famine that produced the most-watched concert in history was caused by forced collectivization, forced grain seizures, and a deliberate policy of using hunger as a weapon against civilians. Four decades later, that half of the story still does not appear in most accounts of Live Aid.

In July 1985, over a billion people watched Live Aid.

Months earlier, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie had written "We Are the World." All of it was a response to a famine in Ethiopia.

In December 2006, an Ethiopian court convicted Mengistu of genocide. In May 2008, the sentence was upgraded to death. He has lived in exile in Zimbabwe since 1991, never extradited and never tried in person.

The most durable free-market reforms of the late twentieth century were not delivered by ideologically committed governments. They were delivered by pragmatic governments that read the evidence and accepted it.

Hawke and Keating wanted Australia to work. The data said open the economy. They opened it.

In 1983, Australia elected a Labor government. Bob Hawke and his Treasurer Paul Keating took office promising what Labor parties everywhere promise: more state, more protection, more spending.

They did the opposite. And it worked better than any conservative government had managed in a generation. 🧵

Hawke and Keating were not students of Hayek. They did not quote Friedman. They looked at the data, concluded the old model was broken, and built something that worked.
