As the April 30 deadline approaches for STEAM Sports Foundation scholarship applicants, we thought it might be worthwhile to hear what current recipient, Purdue’s Kelly Song, says about the scholarship:

"The STEAM Sports Foundation Scholarship has led me to meet so many other women in STEM that I feel connected to based on our shared experiences of being minorities in an industry that has not always been kind to us. During our time together on the Immersion Tours, I never felt so understood and welcomed by people. Honestly, I don't think I've ever been in a place with so many women my age in it [motorsports] at once. The behind-the-scenes knowledge I've gained has made the motorsports industry so much more interesting to me and has reinforced my desire to work in it. The scholarship has also enabled me to further pursue my dream of a graduate degree with the financial aid it has provided to me. I am extremely grateful to Bob for seeing the potential in me and all the other women as trailblazers of the future. At 4p ET today, our award-winning mini documentary “PIONEER ENGINEERS” hits the big screen for the first time in N. Hollywood at the First Glance Film Festival!

PIONEER ENGINEERS chronicles six female minority engineering students who spend a foundation-sponsored weekend in Charlotte, NC at a NASCAR race. There they come to understand both the opportunities and challenges of what it’s like to be both a female and a minority chasing a traditionally white male-dominated career as a motorsports engineer. The climb is rocky. There are practically no role models. So, they learn they will have to become the pioneers.

The six visit Trackhouse Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, UNC-Charlotte’s motorsports lab, and Charlotte Motor Speedway where they meet inspirations like Alba Colon and TaiJaune Robinson. Both explain that the road will not be easy but that the students have every right to be at the table with their diversity of thought, STEAM-centric learning and grit.
