"The Country" is an abstraction you can tell yourself you love, and make sacrifices for, in a bid to excuse your material mistreatment of actual human beings. And many of those human beings will thank you for it.

Fitting the bill for "empire" or not, we've killed, terrorized, coerced, & starved far more in our short run than any iteration of the Roman Empire.
