A message from our club President, Dave Ashford.

“It was with huge sadness that we heard yesterday morning, Tuesday 4th August, that former Club stalwart, Dougie Pipe, had passed away very suddenly at St Elizabeth Hospice. Dougie had just celebrated his 79th birthday. He leaves behind, his Wife Sue, his two children Nicola and Mel, and his six grandchildren.

Whilst Doug had been ill for several weeks and had weekly sessions of radiotherapy, he was only admitted to the Hospice on Monday 3rd
August.

Dougie joined Felixstowe Town, with several others who were part of the very successful Sunday side, Parkside F.C, who played in Ipswich. The team signed en bloc and played as Felixstowe Town in the Essex & Suffolk Border League on Saturdays and continued to play as Parkside on Sundays.
Dougie was a left sided player with two good feet. He could cross a ball from the right or left. Felixstowe Town, who had to apply for several years to be re-elected to the ESBL improved with the influx of new players, and had several successful years, culminating in winning the Suffolk Senior Cup in 1974/5 and being runners up in the ESBL. Dougie was almost an ever present during these four years. As a result of this success, the Club applied and were elected into the Eastern Counties League in 1976/7, where Dougie continue to play for the Club. He really kept himself fit and was a dedicated trainer, hardly ever missing a training session.

After his playing career was over Doug joined the Committee.
In 1988, Felixstowe Town were the only Club in the ECL without floodlights. The League decided that any club without floodlights at the start of the 1990 season would be expelled from the League.
Dougie was one of a small group within the club, who agreed to raise funds towards the floodlights and legal costs. As a result, the first Sportsmans Dinner took place and £10,000 was raised on the night.

Over the next few years Doug took on various roles:- he was Assistant Manager, Vice Chairman and Fundraiser, whilst continuing to be on the Club Committee. He was part of the team from Felixstowe Port & Town F.C. who were responsible in discussing the merger of the two clubs in 2000. Prior to the commencement of the building of the current clubhouse, Dougie assisted in contacting former players and team mates to attend a fund raising evening at Dellwood. Nearly 60 "Old Boys" turned out and between them raised over £4000 towards the build.

Dougie continued to support the Felixstowe & Walton club with his attendance at home games. After his service of over 50 years, Dougie joined the Felixstowe Rotary Club where he organised charitable events and served the local community. Doug was President of the Felixstowe Rotary Club during 2023-2024.

Dougie Pipe was always polite and a true Gentleman, he was 100% trustworthy and apart from working with him at the Club for so many years, he became a very close friend. It has been a privilege to have known you Dougie:- you will be sorely missed by your family and the many friends you have made during your association with the town of Felixstowe.
