Exciting news this morning- apparently I’m “the founder of @UConn”! No wonder they want to interview me: I’m Charles *and* Augustus Storrs, I’m about 200 years old, and “my business” made over $1.7 billion in revenue in 2023. 20 mins should be plenty of time! 😂
@MayoOnTheBrain That reviewer’s (and the dominant) mindset leads to -at best- boring papers. In Fermi’s words “There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery.”
@tanzinavega It would bother me less if they didn’t also act like you’re fundamentally untrustworthy by checking your receipt after. I have to self checkout? That’s annoying. Then made to feel like a shoplifter? More annoying given that I didn’t want to do it in the first place
Trying and continually failing to work out how to even BEGIN a systematic literature review (How do know if I constructed the string/s properly? How do I categorize & organize the results? Why can’t I find the kind of results I’m looking for?) is driving me ✨insane✨
@dperkinsed So much lack of understanding about what inquiry is and is not, and about the fact that any teaching approach can be done better or worse; it’s not monolithic in any sense. It very much undermines evangelicals’ positions when they use terms inaccurately/interchangeably!
My long-standing favorite remains being asked by a senior male academic:
"A PhD? How old are you? Don't you want to...get married? Have kids?"
(He's not invited to my wedding this weekend) 🤣
I made this & when I shared it someone said "Why so angry?" As a woman & graduate student in academia I've heard & experienced so much crap I didn't know where to even start. I'd love to add quotes from female academics: what are some of the F-'d up things you've heard?
@GuyTalksFinance We had this issue too- had a 2.5% mortgage and had to move to a bigger house so my mother could come and live with us. The mortgage on the house we bought costs us $1000 more PER MONTH than if we had been able to buy it when the interest rate was lower
@rpondiscio@ehanford I’d love something about math, the ideological and pedagogical shifts from changing beliefs about math learning, what’s going on in CA etc
@greg_ashman And as you presumably know, having done a doctorate yourself, “positivistic” just describes one end of an epistemological spectrum from interpretivistic to positivistic that describes different ways of thinking about what “knowing” is/means
@DDyslexiaMD@karenvaites@markseidenberg@DrMPaff@SusanBneuman Very interesting! I wish I understood more about how states choose the curricula they put on their “approved” lists because there seems to be a lot of this kind of thing. The schools who have the best ELA outcomes seem usually to have to advocate for an unlisted program
