MP & Deputy Leader TMC, Rajya Sabha. Journalist for 30+ yrs. Author: `Indira,India’s Most Powerful PM.’ ‘Vajpayee: India's Most Loved PM.’ ‘Why I Am A Liberal”.
A government whose leader hasn’t ever given a competitive exam, whose home minister has gone missing after the police targeted unarmed student protestors, most of whose ministers send their children abroad to study can have no skin in reforming exam systems in India . My speech in parliament on the public exam bill, made both as an MP but also as a mother of a doctor who has seen the Indian NEET exam first hand.
Businesses do not suffer because of peaceful protests. They suffer when the govt decides to shut down an entire city, suspend internet services and restrict the movement of its own citizens and turn the city into a war-zone.
Since its inception, the Cockroach Janta Party has maintained that we will always follow Gandhi’s path of peace and non-violence, and we have stood by that commitment. We have organised protests in Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Nagpur, and every single one of them has been peaceful. I was personally assaulted in Jaipur, but even then, I chose not to retaliate because responding to violence with violence goes against everything we believe in. We would rather exercise the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution, drafted under the leadership of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, than resort to physical force. Our strength comes from our commitment to constitutional values, and no amount of provocation will make us abandon them.
Despite this, there are constant attempts to portray us as anarchists simply because we refuse to remain silent. But demanding answers from the govt is not anarchy, protesting against injustice on the streets is not anarchy, and questioning those who hold public office is certainly not anarchy. These are the most fundamental expressions of democracy. The very party that is in power today spent decades organising protests, taking to the streets and questioning the governments of the day when it was in opposition. Had the same restrictions, intimidation and police crackdowns been used against them, many of those who occupy positions of power today might never have reached where they are. It is deeply hypocritical to celebrate protests as a democratic right when you are in opposition and treat the same act as a threat to public order when you come to power.
We are not asking for privileges or special treatment. We are simply asking to exercise the rights that belong to every citizen of this Republic, irrespective of which party is in power. So let us fulfil our duty as citizens of this country by questioning those we elect, demanding accountability and speaking up whenever we witness injustice.
A govt that has been elected by the people is bound to listen to the people, not silence them. Democracy does not end once the votes have been counted.
The tricolour rules everywhere. But on a different point : a public city market is equivalent to private property? I suggest you do a LOT, a LOT of study. Read extensively on the public realm, collective spaces and the role of the public square for expressions of free speech. Also read on the national flag as an inclusive emblem for all . Once you have read extensively ( if you can read, that is), then tweet. Thanks !
WHAT IS DELHI POLICE UP TO?
Abhijeet Dipke has been detained for holding the Indian National Flag. Let that sink in. In Independent India, our youth are being detained for peacefully asserting their democratic rights.
This is nothing short of an undeclared Emergency. A government that fears dissent is now trying to intimidate an entire generation into silence. This is the conduct of a fascist regime that cannot tolerate a voice it cannot control.
Abhijeet, Ashutosh, Saurav — you represent the courage, conscience and aspirations of India’s youth. You cannot silence an entire generation by suppressing its voice.
Your Didi stands firmly with you. No intimidation, no detention and no abuse of power can crush the spirit of democracy.
WAKE UP, INDIA! The fight for democracy, freedom and the right to dissent will continue.
Highly alarming reports that police stations in Bengal are being used to organise political affidavits for traitor MLAs: police are apparently finding people, arranging court papers and notaries, and collecting the documents. This is beyond shocking. When did the police & thanas start organising political affidavits? Who authorised this exercise, and are people signing freely or being coerced? An IMMEDIATE and transparent explanation is needed.
Welcome to Chingrighata Flyover, Kolkata’s newest bike-skating arena!💀
Road painted before Durga Puja, and now bikers are slipping and sliding 😭
Public roads aren’t canvases for experiments. Who’s accountable for putting lives at risk?
Every day, the @narendramodi government shows us what autocracy looks like: arresting young protestors for waving the tricolour at Jantar Mantar? Full support to our young friends of @Cockroachisback. TOGETHER we will reclaim Jantar Mantar and the spirit of our great Republic. Support and solidarity. Stay strong, courageous roaches. 💪 #JantarMantar
We, and many generations before us, have fought strongly for our democratic rights. We must continue to do so.
I strongly condemn the arrest of Ashutosh and Saurav of the CJP. These moments are about us all, pledging and standing up to fight unitedly to protect our great democracy. This is an attempt to intimidate and silence an entire generation. This is unacceptable.
We must never surrender our constitutional rights.
This murdering of democracy is happening in many parts of the country. At this moment, 14,000 of our people in Bengal are facing the brunt of police and political atrocities.
A government that has forgotten that ‘it is of the people, by the people, for the people’ is nearing its end.
To the millions of young people I say: Your Didi is with you - today and forever! Let us stand together and save our Mother India.
Jai Hind!
Vande Mataram!
Joy Bangla!

Massive & shocking numbers of police at @AITCofficial protest rally in Kolkata today but still a high voltage powerful andolan by TMC’s students and youth. Dear @BJP4India you can barricade the streets but you can’t barricade the spirit of Bengal!
Sea of humanity at @AITCofficial protest in Kolkata today. A maha protest led by @MamataOfficial . The Trinamool Congress has roared back to the streets.
As long as Gyanesh Kumar is CEC there will be no free and fair polls in India. The INDIA alliance is fully united. Our protests will continue. We will not stop until democracy is restored .
Gyanesh Kumar-headed @ECISVEEP is DESTROYING free & fair polls in India. As long as the Gyanesh Kumar-headed ECI continues, there will be NO free & fair polls in India.
- Smt @sagarikaghose, Hon'ble RS MP, AITC
INDIA alliance leaders stand UNITED in this fight!
We will not back down until criminal proceedings are initiated against every official, including the CEC, found responsible for depriving people of their democratic rights. There must be accountability for every violation, and no one should be allowed to escape scrutiny, regardless of the position they hold.
Be it Bengal, Haryana, Maharashtra, or Bihar - these elections have raised serious questions about electoral integrity and the credibility of our democratic process. The government currently in power in Bengal cannot escape the serious questions surrounding the electoral process that brought it to power. The large-scale Vote Chori must be thoroughly investigated, and the truth must come out.
Our fight for democracy, justice, and the people's right to vote will continue until accountability is served and the sanctity of every single vote is upheld!
After having delivered the assembly election to the BJP in a brazenly fraudulent manner, the CEC has had this Press Note issued. There is no limit to Gyanesh Kumar’s shamelessness.
🚨 BIG BREAKING: WEST BENGAL ELECTION WAS A FRAUD.
We are not saying this. Election Commission’s own press release is saying it.
Rahul Gandhi की “Shivji ki Baraat” का Tandav देखने के बाद अब Gyanesh Gaddar को eligible voters याद आए?
Election पहले करा दिया. Voters अब जोड़ोगे? 😭
