A woman in Bihar was harassed and humiliated on camera. The footage was real. But when it began circulating online, a false communal identity was attached to the incident, turning a crime against two people into a story about religious conflict.
A similar pattern played out with another viral video from Bangladesh that was circulated as a communal attack in India.
The result is more powerful than an ordinary fake: people are not being asked to believe something that never happened. They are being asked to believe something real happened for a completely different reason.
What happens when a real video becomes ammunition for a false story?
