Join us for the forthcoming Scientific & Technical Writing Course with experienced tutor Dr Jonathan Moseley.

This course aims to help scientists, engineers and others who need to write scientific or technical content, to tailor their writing to an appropriate “scientific register”. It will focus primarily on scientific and technical reports within business and industry, academic theses and journal articles. Other formats requiring some scientific or technical content, such as technical product reports and business proposals will also be covered briefly.

Specific features common to scientific, technical and academic writing will be discussed, along with which features to avoid. Practical advice will be given on structuring and writing reports and theses, including helpful hints and tips. Additional features regarding graphics, experimental data, referencing, proof-reading, the journal submission process and managing generative AI, will also be presented.

This course includes activities for both planned (polls, exercise, video) and spontaneous interaction (Q&A).

This Autumn join experienced tutor Dr Wim Dermaut for our popular online Chemical and Process Safety for Development Chemists course.

Ever wondered how to scale up a reaction where gas release is involved? And can I dose that reagent in 30 minutes at large scale, or should it rather be 8 hours? What if I encounter a loss of cooling during my reaction? How can I make a first safety assessment by just looking at the chemistry? Which types of safety testing do I need in which stage of development?

All these questions and many more will be tackled during our dedicated safety course “Chemical and Process Safety for Development Chemists”, with a deep dive in the theoretical principles, lots of real-life examples and practical exercises. The course really takes the chemical process as a starting point and is therefore highly relevant for anyone working with chemical process development at lab and pilot scale, as well as for chemical engineers working in production plants in the pharmaceutical and fine-chemical industry.

This online course is designed for chemists involved in chemical process scale-up. Over four afternoon sessions, participants will gain essential knowledge to ensure safety in chemical research and industrial processes. The course will cover hazard identification, risk assessment, and the safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, with a focus on reactivity hazards like heat and gas release, and thermal stability.
Chemical process safety incidents can vary from bulging reagent drums to catastrophic runaway reactions, often with one common factor: a lack of understanding of the interplay between chemistry and physical consequences. Through case studies and expert insights, the course will help participants anticipate and prevent such incidents, from lab to pilot plant scale-up.

By the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with the tools to implement safety protocols and foster a culture of safety in their organisations.

R&D scientists are often at a disadvantage when working in process research and development because of their lack of knowledge about the basic principles of chemical engineering, and the impact of decisions regarding process yield and selectivity on up- and downstream operations. Other branches of engineering face a similar disadvantage when considering the whole process.

This course has been developed, and is presented, by chemical engineers and chemists who specialise in facilitating knowledge transfer and understanding between different scientific and engineering disciplines working at the R&D-manufacturing interface. As a result, it does not dwell on the derivation of mathematical formulae or equations used in chemical engineering design, but instead focuses on what other disciplines need to know about the information and data that chemical engineers require for design, scale-up and process troubleshooting.

Chemical engineering without mathematics is impossible, but this course presents only relevant mathematics at a level that should not trouble anyone with a numerate scientific degree. Other disciplines do not need to know how to design plants or equipment and this course does not attempt to teach this. The course focuses on understanding chemical engineering principles to promote clear communication between disciplines, facilitating information and knowledge transfer.
