The typical Manhattan grocery store grosses $25 Million - $50 Million with a margin of 1.6%. So a MandaniMart (tm) would run a $10 Mil loss and bankrupt nearby stores causing blight, and loss of tax revenue. Any other hot ideas?
The Lower East Side has lost a giant. Chino Garcia dedicated his life to Loisaida — co-founding CHARAS/El Bohio and teaching generations what a community can build together. My heart is with his family, the community, and all who loved him.
I have no doubt there will be many well-written social media posts condemning the antisemitic stabbings on the Upper West Side today, and I’m sure many people’s thoughts and prayers will be with the victims and their families.
But these statements ring hollow when so many in the city normalize antisemitism, including simply by associating American Jews with the actions of the Israeli government.
Enough is enough.
“I beseech all those in a position of power, including our mayor, to hear our cry from the heart, to please help take the temperature down,” says Micah Lasher, state assemblyman who’s poised to be the next congressman of this district.
Hmm. Notice which NYC leader is not at the press conference outside the synagogue where a Jewish man was stabbed while the attacker yelled allahu akbar. He’s probably at Gracie Mansion having breakfast with the attacker
I am absolutely sickened and furious by what appears to be an antisemitic stabbing on the Upper West Side.
While we await additional details to be confirmed, we know that what is happening in our city is abhorrent. The fear in the Jewish community is real. Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood, regardless of their faith or identity.
We must remain united in condemning antisemitism and ensuring those responsible are held fully accountable. I thank the NYPD for its swift response in apprehending the assailant.
My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones.
I get that Jamaal Bowman has to make a living now & DSA grift may be his only option, but attacking @NYStrategist is pathetic. NYT reached out to Patrick Jenkins b/c he has a well-earned reputation as someone who fights for what he believes in and actually serves the community.
Tracey Towers tenants are urging City Council members to strengthen oversight of Mitchell-Lama housing after they were hit with a proposed 30% rent increase that residents say follows years of deteriorating conditions and deferred maintenance.

This is tough. The out year spending limit is crazy low ... functionally nothing. It really needs to be adjusted or we will continue to see incumbents opt out. (h/t to @scottmstringer who raised this to me 8 years ago when we were increasing the match, should have fixed it then)
Standing at the Muslim Heritage Month Proclamation Ceremony, surrounded by a community that has fought so hard to be seen, celebrated, and recognized in this city.
Muslim Americans have shaped the fabric of this nation in ways that are still not fully told. This proclamation was a step toward changing that. A reminder that our heritage, our history, and our contributions belong in every official record. ✨💪🏽

Mayor Zohran Mamdani won City Hall in 2025 by out-organizing big money, including record Super PAC spending aimed at him. Now he reportedly won't join NYC's public matching funds program for his reelection bid. We think that's a mistake. 🧵
I specifically want to thank @JeannineKiely, who has done and will do so much incredible work for our community. I have enormous respect for her work and for her as a human being. The district is lucky to have her, and I am honored to have been able to run in this race with her.
Lillian Roberts was a true pioneer in NY’s labor movement. She broke new ground as @NYSLabor Commissioner, built a stronger @DC37nyc and helped to found the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. Through it all, she understood the value of public service. I mourn her passing and send condolences to her family, friends and colleagues in labor. Rest in Power, Lillian.
peter is the only professional journalist who understands dsa—this man is like anyone covering the labor beat back in 2020 and is going to be hired by the nyt in 5 years
The college savings account program I helped launch has already served more than 340,000 students with $100 investments.
Yesterday, the City Council expanded the @NYCKidsRISE program TENFOLD — with a $1,000 investment for every public school kindergartner.
Big win for our kids! Big win for NYC's future!
Thank you @SpeakerMenin & to your whole team, the membership, and staff. To Council Members @JimGennaro, @LindaLeeforNYC, @alexaforcouncil, @ChrisMarteNYC for being champions for both working homeowners & fighting carbon emissions. CLC collaborated with @steamfitters638, @PeteSikora1@nychange, @foodandwater, @ClimateJobsNY, @NYPIRG, and together, created the context to put money in-the-pockets of working homeowners who are squeezed. We’re looking for ways to get money into-families-pockets to make lived reality better; that’s double for sandwiched, multi-generational Union households.
