@tangotiger I'm asking what the literal rule is. From what I've found, the official signal is tapping your head. If that's the case, part of the umpire's job is maintaining a line of sight over the C, P, and batter for the two seconds following a pitch.
"But the replay systems are more accurate!"
If you want to be on the side of a system that requires the official to stop the game for five minutes while he consults a video sync'd with a sensor in the ball to see if someone got a touch, that's your prerogative.
Since we are yet again engaged with a VAR-troversy, a reminder that we've chosen this path. Most replay is aesthetically dissatisfactory and we've allowed high-profile officiating mistakes to outweigh the simple joy of athletic competition.
Replay - in all sports - is not so much a slippery slope as it is a super highway to the demand for 100% accuracy AND the instant gratification of said accuracy. I might actually prefer the "my team was robbed" life.

As pretty much completely expected ... pitchers are using ABS challenges less as the season's gone on. I don't think it'll ever truly zero out, but it'll get close.
