Impressive performance from the Socceroos which shouldn’t be overshadowed by the disappointing late goal. Thought it was an improvement in possession from the World Cup as a whole, with the team able to keep and advance the ball consistently. On a personal level, Lucas Herrington was tremendous - playing more confidently than he has before for Australia. Okon-Engstler, Italiano, Behich, Circati and Yengi were also good - while Nestor Irankunda’s goal was unforgettable.

Solid first half from the Socceroos against a Brazilian side seemingly playing within itself. The Socceroos have been able to keep and advance possession better than in just about every World Cup. Yengi has made a real difference. His ability both to drop deep and link play and to fight for every loose ball and header has given the Socceroos more time on the ball and ultimately created opportunities down the left hand side for Behich and Irankunda.

A lot of people have asked me who my pick for breakout player of the upcoming A-League season is and my answer is Emmett Shaw (2009).

Shaw scored a double last night against the NPLQ All-Stars and, provided he stays fit, can make a real impact this season.
