When 11-year-old Isaiah was diagnosed with SMA Type I, his family had no treatment options. Isaiah has successfully been enrolled in this research framework for 8 years. His current lifesaving regimen includes an IV secondary treatment every 4 weeks, alongside his regular SPINRAZA spinal injections administered every 4 months. This is why NIH dollars are so important and what is put in jeopardy when pediatric research faces funding cuts.

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Ken Stuart’s election to the National Academy of Sciences—one of the highest honors in science.
Over a 50-year career, Dr. Stuart has made groundbreaking discoveries to combat global infectious diseases, including the discovery of RNA editing, while maintaining continuous NIH funding since 1976. His work continues to shape solutions for diseases like malaria and African sleeping sickness.
Equally impactful is his legacy as a mentor, helping to develop the next generation of global health leaders and reinforcing Seattle Children’s Research Institute as a destination for world-class scientific talent.

Every breakthrough in care starts with a question—and the courage to find the answer.
At Seattle Children’s, clinical trials are driving real change for patients and families. Through decades of research, teams like Margaret Rosenfeld, MD, MPH’s have helped bring forward therapies that not only treat symptoms, but address the root causes of complex lung diseases.
This progress is only possible because of the partnership between researchers, patients and families—working together to shape the future of care.
