I did something terrible involving one of the business associates of these people. It was around 1995 or 1996.

The first set we knew were the original barter traders. You give them a leaking plastic bucket and they give you a few coins. You could also trade spoilt slippers, old clothes, soft drink bottles, and things like that. They would either give you coins or brand new plastic buckets in return. I had no business with them personally.

Then a new version of the trade came along. This group targeted kids. You could trade shoes, clothes, iron scrap and similar items for coins ranging from 25 kobo to ₦2, depending on what you brought. Somewhere along the line, someone decided it was a good idea to introduce sweets and Cadbury candies into the mix. That changed everything.

I went to spend the holiday at my maternal grandparents' house. One day, they both went out and left us at home. I started by trading a spoilt pair of slippers and got a sweet in return. The moment that sweet started melting in my mouth, I knew I was in trouble. A stupid little voice in my head said, "The slippers you're wearing also look old. Do you even need them?" That was how it started.

My grandfather's shoes went next. Then my grandmother's slippers. Then my grandfather's relatively old agbádá.

The moment my grandparents came back, one of my younger cousins reported me, upset that the candy I had given him was too small. Greedy b^stard! My grandparents went out to find the barter man. Luckily, he had gone further down the street and was just making his way back when they spotted him. They accused him of exploiting young children, but the man stood on business. He collected twice the worth of the candies he had given me before handing back their clothes and slippers.

I was beaten like a goat that day. It was a sad ending to a day that started so sweet.

"Cost of collection rose from N1.88 trillion in 2023, to N2.63 trillion in 2024, to N4.18 trillion in 2025. These agencies take a fixed percentage of what they collect. The more revenue Nigeria earns, the more they keep automatically, without appropriation, often with less scrutiny.

This is the real leakage. And it should be fixed. Just as the President corrected the NNPCL collection of 30% Management Fee on Oil/Gas revenues, through EO9 , these collection costs should be a fixed amount in the budget and not an open-ended percentage."
