@drumm_colin What stops economics from being performative? If a central bank runs a DSGE model that gives them a publishable interest rate forecast by putting it out there they change things? Am I making a category error here?
@Discoplomacy I remember you saying that the tech space was kind of saturated but the number of western mandarin speakers was too low. What opportunities do you imagine opening up if one invested in acquiring the language (which is a big time commitment and opportunity cost)
This river here is the official geographical border between Anthropic and OpenAI. On the other side cosmic horror, torment nexus, machine despotism, you build spyware for the govt and you like it. On this side civilization, Claude constitution, unceasing allegiance to the human race, you build spyware for the govt and you don't like it.
I haven't seen the rest of this talk but how is everything just said not ideology? Also, the technocrat's dream is the dissolution of politics and while I think AI is a fundamentally different technology I suspect this will still just be a dream (and thank god for that too)
Dario Amodei: Ideology Won't Survive the Reality of AI
"We're going to find that ideology will not survive the nature of this technology. The things I'm talking about are gonna become bipartisan and universal because everyone will recognize the necessity of it." — @DarioAmodei
@Discoplomacy Interested in how we now have a saturated china tech reporting ecosystem but too few Western Mandarin speakers. What would you say some of the highest priority things someone who is Western and speaks Mandarin should be doing?
I recall ~5 years ago reading EAs saying EAs shouldn't spend money on electoral politics because it was zero sum (e.g. $400mil party A goes against $400mil party B burning with $400mil effectively being burnt without outcome). I suspect this will cease to be the case soon.
For $50 billion a year you could buy the entire political economies of most of the ‘Middle Power’ countries as one large bulk purchase.
You could buy the entirety of Westminster for about $1 billion - the entire think tank, events, policy pipeline stack. Imagine it’s probably the same with other ‘Middle Powers’. Over the course of three years you could reshape a good chunk of the information entering the governments of these powers upstream of tangible policy. Fun to think about.
@Discoplomacy I suppose I’m just suspicious given you’re normally posting interesting content on major (even existential) issues like defence and AI but then shoplifting? Posting these videos is usually a package deal with a bunch of other beliefs so curious to see what the basis was
@Discoplomacy Surely it would be more effective to target those that run organised retail crime networks than shoplifting pawns though? I doubt they’d care much about how law enforcement treat their frontline. Second point is fair enough, especially given many will be youth or seniors
@RichardMCNgo@bendunnflores@AmandaAskell@jgreenhall Which virtues? And are you using it in a layperson’s sense of attributes or in the holistic golden mean/Aristotelian sense?
Which elites (finance/business/tech/pol/culture)? EA strat seemed to empower Oxbridge/Ivy elite children to occupy sites of power to beat other elites?
@RichardMCNgo@bendunnflores@AmandaAskell Do you think that the int/a and/or metacrisis crowd has a better shot at mobilising agentic people to this virtue-oriented game or is it too close to EA meaning traditional networks of power are what really matter
@RichardMCNgo@AmandaAskell Sliding doors.
Prediction - current stasis in Chinese open labs will be broken by the first lab who finds Chinese AA and trains a model with unique perspective, constitution, etc.

Google AI workers in the UK have voted to unionize.
These workers voted to unionize 98% to 2%, reportedly in response to the deal struck between Google and the US military to use the technology they're working on.
At least 1,000 workers are in the union.
