My new @washingtonpost column:
The causes behind falling birth rates aren't a complete mystery. A big part of the reason is secularization and the spread of "selfish norms." Could a return to religion be a solution — or is it too late?

Why does getting married and having kids matter? It's not just about sustaining populations. It's about individual happiness. Presumably, we want people to be happier rather than sad — and one of the strongest predictors of happiness is family formation.

Are smartphones the cause of falling fertility rates? Not exactly. Smartphones exacerbate "selfish norms" and those selfish norms lead people away from marriage.

Well said. It's anti-semitic to conflate American Jews with the state of Israel and its policies, which would suggest some kind of dual loyalty. It's always critical to make this distinction as clear as day.
President Biden made a massive moral, strategic and political error backing Israel's genocide in Gaza.
President Trump made a massive moral, strategic and political error launching war on Iran with Israel.
The difference is Trump may have figured out he needs to reverse course.
Had Biden done so, we likely wouldn't be talking about a President Trump today.
I never heard such brutal honesty about the state of Israel from an American official before. Those in the Biden administration would sooner sell their organs than say something like this publicly. In one soundbite he exposes Israel’s utter international isolation and its complete dependence on the US for its security. The masks and the gloves are off.
It's true that this is probably the toughest public criticism offered by a US administration towards Israel in my lifetime. We'll see if it gets translated into action or if it's just rhetoric, but it's still much more than the Biden administration could ever manage.
BREAKING: JD Vance blasts Netanyahu's government:
Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time.
If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world.
This, from @patrickgaspard last year, is key to understanding the rise of the populist left in recent Democratic primaries from NYC to Maine and now DC
"Foreign policy" may rank low on polling priorities for voters. But a willingness to be frank about Israel's violence in Gaza has become a litmus test of moral authority and a gateway to trust on issues like tackling affordability. The result is a sea change among blue coalitions
Our final episode of the season.
This was a difficult conversation but I'm proud that we had it. We spoke to my good friend @rwnicholson_ who is a vocal supporter of Israel. We covered a lot of ground and it got quite tense at times. Check it out.

Mamdani: "Solidarity with a government that is committing genocide is a very different thing than a question of solidarity with people of a specific faith. I'm proud to be a mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population in this country."
Imagine being an Iran war hawk. You spend your professional life working toward getting the US to go to war for Israel in Iran and then, when it finally happens, it is a total disaster that ends up damaging the US-Israel relationship, hurting the US's interests, empowering Iran, and weakening your boy Netanyahu before elections. Biblical level failure.

Amazing conversation. I fully agree with @rwnicholson_, but it was really interesting to hear the pushbacks from @shadihamid and @matthewkaemingk. We really need more interactions like this regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The fact that Muslims were so hated right after 9/11 and now so many years later people are proudly shouting “my mayor’s Muslim” is such a big swing in a positive direction. New York course corrected itself and I’m here for it.
