This is racial politics in its purest form.

Check what Mahathir is saying here! He is not saying vote for good candidates or for clean government or for policies that help the poor, the environment, etc, etc. No. He is telling Malays to vote for Malay candidates because Malay loyalty must be to Malays, and warning that without “Tanah Melayu” (Malay land) Malays will become “a people without a country”.

Yep. No hint of civic politics there!

The hypocrisy is staggering. Malaysians are screaming that Rohingya refugees are dirty, criminal, disloyal, foreign and threatening to take over their land...and meanwhile a former prime minister openly demands that the ethnic majority organise along racial lines to preserve ethnic dominance!

When ethnonationalism is normalised from the top, the dominant group’s anxieties are inevitably taken out on those at the bottom of the pile. Refugees become the scapegoats for “racial tension” and “threatening the land”, while the political elite openly treats that land as an exclusive ethnic prize.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on Malays to vote for Malay candidates instead of being beholden to party loyalty if they want “Tanah Melayu” to remain as such.

“Malays' loyalty is to the Malays. If this loyalty is given to parties or factions, then Tanah Melayu will be gone.

“Without Tanah Melayu, Malays will disappear from this world. Malays will be a people without a country,” the former premier said on Facebook last night.
