Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam isn't secularism. Religious pluralism isn't secularism. Both of these aren't substitutes of secularism. Secularism is the separation of church and the state. A secular state is the greatest guarantor of liberty and equality in a country where there is a religious majority and minority and one side tries to crush another. Even in pluralistic societies, where there isn't any visible conflict, a secular state is the best bet to maintain overall harmony. The makers of our Constitution understood this very well. So they made a very modern document, without referring to some glorious 5,000-year-old civilisation or any ancient or mythical glory.
