🧡 Every Child Matters 🧡
My great-grandma spoke only Cree. As someone proud to be Métis, this day carries deep meaning.
As my friend & Indigenous leader @ShaniGwin says:
➡️ Write your reps
➡️ Join protests
➡️ Donate to Indigenous orgs
➡️ Be loud
Reconciliation takes all of us.
Indigenous issues often get framed through the homeless or public safety lens.
But @ShaniGwin says Edmonton candidates need to address a gamut of other issues and help move past harmful stereoptypes in a city where 6% of residents are Indigenous.

Doug Griffiths from @EdmontonChamber talks about a space an Edmonton business wanted to activate as “where the unhoused gather and do bad things.” Lololol whaaaaat? Yikes! #stateofthecity y’all!
Very weird state of the city without the Mayor delivering it. I wonder when and who decided it should be given by a panel of white “city leaders…” And of course no Indigenous representation lol.
Sigh. Downtown elite back at it.
So far, the best speaker was Elder Morin.
Really looking forward to participating in this @UAlberta event TOMORROW!
See you there!

Danielle Smith has directly benefitted fromn DEI efforts, changes and policies.
In fact, the main demographic who benefits are white women. What do we do now?
2 more sleeps until DWF LIVE: Storytime with Métis Santa!
Live on YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn on December 12, join us and Métis Santa as he reads Métis Christmas Mittens, written and illustrated by Leah Marie Dorion, and answers students’ questions about #Métis#Christmas.
@HunterAtHome Funny they state personal safety for their privacy yet consistently post photos and videos of usually vulnerable people without their consent or permission.
Hmmm I wonder who could possibly be behind this type of language placed at the top of the launch. More boots on the ground and “safety” language. I don’t know why the downtown elite doesn’t just say what they mean. Do you want Indigenous People downtown? #yeg@_TimCartmell
139 years ago, Métis icon Louis Riel was unjustly executed by Canada for treason. Today, we celebrate his legacy as a visionary leader who fought for Métis rights and way of life.
they need access to funding (not a lot) and they need more space to support folks.
Let’s invest in our people and the rest will come. 🍓

If your are following the downtown discussion in #yeg, here’s another podcast that talks about how to build community & support unhoused people. There’s already a working model & programs -
Happy International Inuit Day! ᖁᕕᐊᓱᒋᑦᓯ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᐅᑉᓗᐊᓂ. Today, we come together to celebrate Inuit cultures, as seen in the traditional textiles showcased in the Glenbow's 2023 exhibit: ᖃᓪᓗᓈᖅᑕᐃᑦ ᓯᑯᓯᓛᕐᒥᑦ Printed Textiles from Kinngait Studios"
Yet another incident of police violence against Indigenous in Canada. Monday morning twin brothers Joshua and Garrett Papigatuk were shot by Nunavik Police Service in Salluit, Quebec. They were unarmed.
Joshua is dead. Garrett was medivaced out in serious condition. Community members protested in Salluit yesterday denouncing the killings. There is an epidemic of systemic violence via police/RCMP in this country that is largely unchecked.
ICYMI in the Nov. 4 edition of The Pulse, Métis entrepreneur @ShaniGwin told the co-hosts of Episode 283 of Speaking Municipally that the authors of the Downtown Investment Plan did not adequately engage with Indigenous organizations.
