For years, trying to help people off the streets in Chester often felt like taking two steps forward and three steps back.

Homelessness is extraordinarily complex. Despite the efforts of dedicated charities including @shareshopsuk , @soul_chester and @CATHsupport, working closely with @Go_CheshireWest and Chester Council with good people like @weezegee at the helm, Chester could not solve the problem alone.

The more support we provided, improved SWEP offers etc, the more people understandably came to Chester from areas where the same help was not available. That simply showed why we need a joined up approach across every local authority.

For the first time since lockdown, I truly believe we have a genuine opportunity to make a lasting difference for thousands of people who are rough sleeping or sofa surfing.

If @AndyBurnham can help bring all local authorities together on to a level playing field to improve the support available everywhere, this is a unique opportunity that has a real chance of working!

We showed what was possible during lockdown, when every area pulled in the same direction. We CAN do it again, this time creating a lasting pathway away from the streets.

Here in Chester, the ShareShop helps fund the SHARE Homeless Action Centre, SHAC, behind the new Chester Market in St. Martin’s Clinic CH1 2NR.
Alongside warm food, clothing, toiletries, a pool table and daytime activities and day trips, SHAC brings together access to the Council Housing Team, Probation Service, specialist doctors, addiction support, NHS opticians and, coming soon, veterinary care for the pets of people experiencing homelessness.

All under one roof, giving people in Chester the strongest possible chance to rebuild their lives and leave the streets behind for good, over 50 people to date since it opened its doors in March.

There is still so much more to do, but for the first time in a long time, I feel genuinely hopeful.

A society should always be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable, finally we seem to have someone at the top who thinks the same. Our teams at SHARE will do everything we can to play our part in AB’s aim to get everyone in.

For too long, we’ve been told that ending rough sleeping will take decades or even that it's impossible. I'm not having that.

This is something a government can fix if it chooses to. Today, I’m choosing to.

34 PEOPLE HOUSED IN 3 MONTHS.
SHARE Homeless Action Centre celebrates helping 34 people into accommodation in just 3 months, with 5 people housed this month alone.

SHARE is celebrating a remarkable milestone after helping 34 people who were homeless, sleeping rough, or in crisis into accommodation in just 3 months through the SHARE Homeless Action Centre, known as the SHAC.

So far this month alone, five people have already been helped into accommodation.

Based at the former St Martin’s Clinic in Chester, the SHAC has quickly become a vital Homeless Hub, providing hot drinks, food, clothing, toiletries, practical support, advice and a safe place for people to access help.

This success has been made possible through strong partnership working. SHARE volunteers and staff, led by SHAC Manager Lindsey Clapham and CEO Dickie Danby, are especially grateful to Cheshire West and Chester Council, whose housing team continues to work closely with the charity to help people move from crisis into safer accommodation.

The charity also thanks Forum Housing, who provide vital next step supported accommodation, helping people continue their journey away from homelessness with the right support around them.

The SHAC brings together a range of local agencies and welcomes many organisations under one roof, including The Homeless Doctors from St Werburgh’s, Soul Kitchen, CATH Chester Aid to the Homeless, the Job Centre, local Probation Officers and other frontline services.

SHARE also thanks Cheshire Police and the Probation Service, who continue to liaise closely with the charity, recognise positive behaviour, and work constructively with SHARE to support people in crisis and the wider community.

Adam Dandy, a Founder and Chairman of SHARE, said:

“Helping 34 people into accommodation in just 3 months is absolutely incredible. These are real people, with real stories, who have been given a chance to move forward with dignity, support and hope.

“We are extremely grateful to Cheshire West and Chester Council, Forum Housing, Cheshire Police and all the agencies who come into the SHAC and help make it a genuine Homeless Hub for people in crisis.

“The SHAC is not just a building. It is a place where people are listened to, supported and helped to take the next step, whether that is accommodation, medical help, food, employment support, addiction support, or simply having someone to talk to.

“No one organisation can solve homelessness on its own, but by working together, Cheshire West and Chester is showing what can be achieved when people who genuinely care come together to help.”

SHARE will continue working with local agencies, volunteers, supporters and the wider community to provide a safe and supportive place, under one roof for people who are homeless, sleeping rough, or in crisis.

Every week our Homeless Outreach Support Manger Lindsey, gives an update to our volunteers and staff, this weeks made a lot of us at SHARE 😊

“Happy Bank Holiday weekend guys!
Some great results ....in the past 3 months we have had 29 offers of accommodation resulting in 26 of our guys now off the streets and in a warm, safe space. That's one person accommodated every 3 days thanks to the SHAC and CWAC Housing Services!! 🥰
We have served 1161 meals in the past 2 months helping on average 35 people a day!

Our new SHAC continues to move forward and services are loving their new space.

26 volunteers from Lloyds Bank painted the activity room on Wednesday and reorganised the clothing space.

Thank you all so much for your help and support this week. Without you none of this would be possible, never mind actually happening!

⭐ 5 STARS for SHARE’s Homeless Action Centre in Chester ⭐

We are really pleased to share that the kitchen at our new SHAC (SHARE Homeless Action Centre) located in the old St. Martin’s Clinic, has been awarded a 5 Star Food Hygiene Rating following a recent inspection.

For us, this is about making sure the people we serve every day are treated with dignity, respect and care.

A city should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members of society. Here in Chester we believe that includes making sure people who are homeless can sit down somewhere safe, clean and welcoming and enjoy a hot meal.

Lindsey Clapham, SHARE’s Outreach Manager said “Every meal prepared at the SHAC is prepared by an incredible team of volunteers and staff who give their time to support people who are homeless or facing crisis across Chester and North Wales. The same hygiene standards you would expect in any café or restaurant are the standards we believe everyone deserves.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to our volunteers who keep the kitchen spotless and make sure every meal served is safe, warm and welcoming.”

To someone who has been sleeping rough, a clean place, a warm meal and a friendly face can mean the world.

“I can’t actually remember the last time I sat on a warm couch with a brew and some dinner and watched a movie” annon person who is sleeping rough in Chester.
