There is a Hebrew proverb that says you die twice.....

Once when your heart stops.
And once when your name is spoken for the last time.

I think about that often.

In 2004, our family lost my brother-in-law, Keith Milano, to suicide.

After Keith died, my wife Denise made a promise: he would not go quietly.

For more than twenty years, we have kept that promise by saying his name, sharing his story, and speaking openly about mental health and suicide prevention.

But I have been keeping a secret.....

I wrote a chapter about it.

It is called “Why Didn’t I Know He Could Die?” and it is part of a new book "𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚."

The chapter appears in the Money is for… Enduring section.

And that word matters.

Enduring is not just getting through something painful.
It is finding a way to carry love forward.

For our family, money became more than a number.

It became a way to raise awareness, support mental health advocacy, help other families feel less alone, and keep Keith’s story doing good in the world.

Because legacy is not only what you leave behind.
It is what continues because you chose to act.

Even More Than Money is out in the world, having released on July 21, 2026.

Have you ever looked at your calendar and wondered how your life got so far from what matters most?

The commute.
The late nights.

The “I’ll be home soon” texts…

When my older son was born, I started looking at my life differently.

At the time, my office was about 20 miles from home.
On a map, that did not seem so bad.

But with New York traffic, some nights it took me 45 minutes to get home.

So I drew a ten-mile circle around my house and made myself a promise:
“I’m going to buy a location somewhere in here.”

Eventually, I found a space 7 miles from home.

That decision bought me back time.

It gave me a way to build @MitlinFinancial while being present more

For me, my boys needed to know they were my priority.
And not just in words.

Over the years, I have often felt like I was on an island, as I make it very clear that my family, my boys, came first.

Dads don’t talk about the hard stuff enough.
And though I never thought the answer would with getting together a group of Dads on an actual island, my @REBL_Dads time on Necker Island proved me wrong.

I am honored to have contributed a story about what I have learned being a dad to @ZachSprung55 and @jeremy_sprung

My story is included in “REBL Dad: What 100+ Fathers Reveal About Successful Leadership at Home and Work,” alongside stories from an incredible group of dads.
