Cyclosporiasis—a parasitic illness that causes nausea, cramping, and what has been described as “watery diarrhea,” “relentless diarrhea,” and, most vividly, “explosive diarrhea”—has infected thousands of people across the U.S. Meanwhile, neither the Food and Drug Administration nor the C.D.C. currently has a Senate-confirmed leader. The United States hasn’t had a Surgeon General for a year and a half. Since the start of President Trump’s second term, the F.D.A. has lost around 20 per cent of its staff. The C.D.C. has lost a quarter. The C.D.C.’s parasite-surveillance team had 11 scientists before DOGE; now it has three.

Montana is the only United States state to enshrine Indigenous education in its constitution.

Adopted in 1972, Article X of the Montana Constitution recognizes the distinct and unique cultural heritage of American Indians. It commits the state through its educational system to the preservation of their cultural integrity.

This constitutional provision laid the groundwork for the Indian Education for All initiative. Under Montana law every public school student whether Native or non Native is required to learn about the distinct histories and cultures of American Indians in a culturally responsive manner. Public school employees must also receive the necessary knowledge and resources to deliver this instruction accurately.

The curriculum goes beyond presenting Native people solely as figures from history. It incorporates the histories cultures governments languages and contemporary experiences of Montana tribal nations. Schools are encouraged to collaborate with tribes when developing appropriate educational materials.

Montana is home to 12 tribal nations and seven reservations making Native history an integral part of the state identity. For decades however many students received minimal instruction about the peoples whose nations predated the formation of Montana as a state.

Several other states including Washington have enacted laws requiring the teaching of tribal history and sovereignty. Montana stands apart because its commitment is embedded in the state constitution rather than relying solely on legislation.
