New research co-led by M&C Saatchi, @shoutoutuk_UK and @nisien_AI, commissioned by @LDN_VRU, reveals that social media algorithms are actively promoting extreme violence and misogyny to teenagers, changing the scale of local disputes and escalating them into physical, real-world harm.
The key takeaways from our research:
🚨 Forced Exposure: Young people aren't seeking out harmful content; algorithmic feeds are serving up fight videos and threatening material directly to them.
🚨 The Escalation Loop: Local, schoolyard disputes are being amplified into public, mass online spectacles, making it nearly impossible for young people to escape the pressure to respond physically.
🚨 Online Misogyny & Violence: The data reveals a clear, direct association between spikes in online misogynistic posts and spikes in police-recorded violence against women and girls on the exact same day.
We cannot expect young people to simply turn off their phones. This is a systemic, algorithmic issue.
In response to these findings, the Mayor of London has announced a £5 million city-wide investment to tackle online harms. We are proud to be at the heart of this change - equipping young people with the critical media literacy, emotional resilience, and de-escalation skills they need to navigate these digital minefields.

Last night we headed to Parliament with our Youth Policy Development Group to celebrate the launch of a new report from the APPG for Schools: Empowering Students as Democratic Citizens.

As the UK prepares for Votes at 16, the big question is: Are our schools actually ready to support the next generation of voters?

At Shout Out UK, we were proud to give evidence directly to Parliament for the report to make sure the voices of young people were heard loud and clear.

Here are our major takeaways from the report:
1️⃣ We need more than a vote; we need the tools. Extending the franchise to 16 and 17-year-olds will only work if it's backed by robust Political and Media Literacy education.
2️⃣ Support our teachers. Only 1% of teachers feel fully confident teaching complex political issues. We are calling for systemic funding, training, and continuous CPD so educators feel backed to have these vital classroom discussions.

Our mission has always been to defend democracy by giving young people the critical thinking skills to navigate our world. We are thrilled to see this reflected in the APPG's final recommendations.
