CEO @Global_Neighbrs | 30 years @UN 🇺🇳 (Ex-UN RC to China 🇨🇳 & Kenya 🇰🇪) | Committed to building global 🌎 🤝understanding & solidarity in a polarized 🌍.
I began my career with the United Nations 🇺🇳 in 1997, but my commitment to peace was shaped earlier, during a decade of military service 🇮🇳 . That period instilled discipline, duty and loyalty and also exposed me, at close range, to the human cost of violence. Over time, a growing unease took hold: the realisation that force alone cannot address the underlying drivers of conflict. That recognition ultimately led me to seek a different path.

There’s a particular kind of privilege in the people you get to build something with.
At Global Neighbours in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹 , I have that privilege every day.
Behind every report we publish, every Breakfast Club we host, every fellowship we steward and every dialogue we open between Europe, Asia and beyond, stands a team of exceptional professionals. Diverse in background, united in purpose. They coordinate the events, manage the partnerships and fellowships, and carry complex projects from first idea to final delivery — with care and rigour.
They are the engine of this organisation. They are the reason ideas become action.
To strengthen dialogue in a fractured world 🌍 is not abstract work. It is done by real people, with long hours and quiet dedication, often without the spotlight.
So today the spotlight is theirs.
To this remarkable team in Vienna — thank you 🙏 @Global_Neighbrs
It is an honour to work alongside you.

At the Beijing International Book Fair 🇨🇳, @sidchat1 launched his first book, My Five to Thrive: Practices That Transformed My Body and Mind and Can Transform Yours.
More than a personal achievement, this publication embodies the power of cross-cultural learning and the enduring value of dialogue between civilizations. Born in Calcutta 🇮🇳, home to one of the world's oldest Chinese communities, and shaped by a distinguished international career with the United Nations 🇺🇳, Mr. Chatterjee’s story reflects a lifelong journey across cultures, continents, and ideas.
Written during a period of profound reflection in Guangzhou 🇨🇳, the book draws upon the wisdom of India's ancient traditions of yoga, mindfulness, breathwork, and fasting, while embracing China's vision of wellbeing and collective health through the Healthy China 2030 initiative. The result is a powerful synthesis of Eastern knowledge, personal transformation, and practical guidance for modern life.
At its core, My Five to Thrive is about something deeply universal: the pursuit of balance, resilience, and human flourishing. It reminds us that some of the most meaningful bridges between nations are built not through politics or economics alone, but through shared experiences, mutual learning, and our common aspiration for healthier and more fulfilling lives. 🇮🇳🤝🇨🇳🌍
We extend our warmest congratulations to Mr. Chatterjee on this important achievement and thank all partners and friends who contributed to bringing this project to life, including CICG, President Chang Bo, Sinolingua, and Ambassador Luo Zhaohui.
As Global Neighbours, we are proud to see our CEO advancing the values that define our mission: dialogue, understanding, and cooperation across cultures in pursuit of global peace and prosperity.

Today is International Day of Yoga.
This remarkable global observance was inspired by the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi 🇮🇳, bringing an ancient tradition of well-being to the service of human health, wellness, and our shared humanity.
Just days ago, on June 17, 2026, my book My Five to Thrive 📕 was launched.
The book is rooted in a simple but powerful conviction: that public health and human well-being are among the truest measures of a civilization’s progress.
I wish to express my sincere appreciation to China 🇨🇳 for its long-term vision and steadfast commitment to advancing the Healthy China 2030 initiative. This landmark strategy stands as a compelling example of placing health at the heart of national development.
In the same spirit, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India 🇮🇳, whose vision and leadership helped bring the International Day of Yoga 🧘♀️🧘 to the world 🌍 stage, allowing an ancient practice of wellness to flourish alongside the priorities of modern public health.
The development journeys of both India 🇮🇳 and China 🇨🇳 have informed and inspired many of the reflections in this book. They reinforce a simple truth: when the well-being of people becomes the foundation of development, the health and prosperity of nations rise with it.
My sincere thanks 🙏 to @PratikMathur1, Consul General of India 🇮🇳 in Shanghai 🇨🇳, for inviting me to Shanghai to mark #IYD2026.
Pratik is among the finest diplomats I have had the privilege to know—a consummate professional, an outstanding representative of India, and a genuine bridge-builder between nations and peoples.

@Global_Neighbrs
Honoured to have received a letter from the UN 🇺🇳 Secretary-General. My reply below. 🙏
Thank you, Mr. Secretary-General, for your gracious letter.
To have served as UN 🇺🇳 Resident Coordinator in China 🇨🇳 remains the singular honour of my life in public service—the jewel in the crown of three decades spent in pursuit of a more just and connected world 🌎.
The lessons of those years travel with me still, into my work as CEO of Global Neighbours 🇦🇹 and as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University 🇨🇳, among the world’s great seats of learning. 🌏
Allow me to honour your leadership, and the quiet courage you have shown against headwinds no Secretary-General before you has been asked to weather.
You have embodied the very finest of what the United Nations 🇺🇳 was founded to be. It is my earnest hope that your successor will carry forward the reforms you so boldly began—and see realised a United Nations equal to the demands of our age, fit for purpose on every count. 🇺🇳

“Austria 🇦🇹, I believe, is not yet living up to its full potential.”
That was one of the more candid things I found myself saying this week, in a wide-ranging conversation with an illustrious journalist Ms Susanna Bastaroli for Die Presse @DiePressecom at my office in Vienna — on the future of multilateralism, Austria’s 🇦🇹 untapped potential, and where the next world 🌎 order will be written.
Some thoughts:
For the first time since the Second World 🌎 War, crises are interwoven — hunger, health, climate, conflict — a cocktail no nation can untangle alone, however powerful. This is precisely why multilateralism is not less relevant today, but more vital than ever.
Yet the UN 🇺🇳 cannot meet this moment as it stands. The Security Council is stuck in the maps of 1945. It must be reformed to reflect 21st-century realities, and the veto can no longer be allowed to paralyse action on the UN 🇺🇳 Charter peace & security, human rights and development.
Austria 🇦🇹, has the highest potential. Sitting in the heart of Europe, neutral, home to so much of the international system, it has a rare voice — and now a seat on the Security Council is an opportunity to lead as a builder of bridges. In my view the most significant 👍🏽 country in Europe.
After five years in China 🇨🇳 and a 3 decade career in the UN 🇺🇳 across the Global South, I have seen how dignity is built when poverty and hunger is defeated — and why democracy cannot simply be exported.
The new world 🌎 will be shaped in Asia where half of humanity lives. Europe’s opportunity is not to retreat behind its borders, but to become the bridge between North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
This is the work we are building at Global Neighbours — from Vienna to Beijing and from Europe to Asia. @Global_Neighbrs@KernChri

Today, I had the privilege of launching my first book, My Five to Thrive: Practices That Transformed My Body and Mind—and Can Transform Yours, at the Beijing International Book Fair. 🇨🇳
The journey began long before Beijing. I was born in Calcutta 🇮🇳 home to one of the oldest Chinatowns outside China 🇨🇳 —a place where Indian and Chinese cultures have enriched one another for generations. Fitting, perhaps, that a life beginning at the intersection of these two civilizations would lead to a book inspired by the wisdom of both.
It crystallized during 21 days of quarantine in a Guangzhou 🇨🇳hotel room in January 2021. After nearly three decades with the United Nations 🇺🇳 across some of the world’s hardest places, I had a quiet realization: I had spent a lifetime helping repair the world, and neglected to repair myself.
This book is the story of that transformation. It draws on India’s ancient traditions of yoga, breath, and mindfulness, and China’s vision of wellbeing as a public good, embodied in Healthy China 2030. At its heart are five practices: breathwork, fasting, meditation, movement, and the healing power of heat and cold.
At 62, I am healthier, calmer, and more fulfilled than ever—not because I found something new, but because I returned to something ancient.
My deep gratitude to CICG and its President Mr. Chang Bo, and to Sinolingua, for believing in this project; to Ambassador Luo Zhaohui for honoring me with his presence and remarks; and to the many friends in China whose encouragement gave me the confidence to write.
My hope is simple: that this book helps others not merely live longer, but live better—toward a world where health is not a privilege and balance is not a luxury.
From the streets of Calcutta’s Chinatown to the halls of the Beijing International Book Fair, this journey reminds me that the deepest bridges between nations are built not through politics or economics, but through shared humanity. 🇮🇳 🤝 🇨🇳 🌍

We were privileged to welcome Enikö Györfi, Head of Eurasia – China Relations & Cargo Affairs at ÖBB Holding AG, as keynote speaker, and Dr. Harvey Dzodin, Senior Fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, as moderator. Their insights helped frame a thoughtful discussion on both the tremendous potential and the practical challenges of developing connectivity across Europe 🇪🇺, the South Caucasus 🇦🇿, Türkiye 🇹🇷, Central Asia 🇺🇿🇰🇿, and China 🇨🇳.
A particularly valuable contribution came from H.E. Bakhtiyor Ibragimov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Austria, who emphasized the importance of viewing the Middle Corridor within a broader Eurasian connectivity landscape, where multiple routes, partnerships, and regions can reinforce one another.

Congratulations to Türkiye 🇹🇷, Pakistan 🇵🇰, Egypt 🇪🇬, Qatar 🇶🇦 and Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 for their remarkable diplomatic efforts in facilitating the emerging peace ☮️ agreement between the United States 🇺🇸 and Iran 🇮🇷. This achievement stands as a powerful reminder that dialogue remains stronger than division, and diplomacy more enduring than conflict.
At a time of profound global uncertainty, this is multilateralism at its finest—patient, persistent, and purposeful. It demonstrates that even the most complex challenges can be addressed when nations choose engagement over confrontation and cooperation over polarization.
On behalf of Global Neighbours, and personally as its CEO, I salute 🫡 all those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this breakthrough possible. The world 🌎 urgently needs more bridge-builders, more dialogue, and more Track II diplomacy to complement formal statecraft.
Peace is not merely the absence of war—it is the presence of trust, understanding, and shared responsibility for our common future.

Global Neighbours CEO @sidchat1 was honoured to meet with former Austrian President Heinz Fischer 🇦🇹, Ms @MoFroehler, CEO of the @bankimoon_org, and Ms Kathrin Ebner, COO a.i. of the Foundation, for a thoughtful exchange on diplomacy, development, and the future of global cooperation.
The discussion reaffirmed a conviction that lies at the heart of effective multilateralism: peace, development, and security are not separate agendas. They are deeply interconnected. Sustainable development creates opportunity. Opportunity builds trust. Trust strengthens stability. And stability creates the conditions for lasting peace.
President Fischer's decades of public service and unwavering commitment to dialogue offered a powerful reminder that principled leadership remains indispensable in an increasingly fragmented and multipolar world. Equally inspiring was the shared recognition that the challenges of the 21st century — from climate change and inequality to technological transformation and geopolitical uncertainty — cannot be solved by any nation, institution, or sector acting alone.
For Global Neighbours, this is precisely why bridge-building matters. We believe that the future of multilateralism will depend not only on formal institutions, but also on the strength of the relationships, partnerships, and networks that connect societies across borders.
The exchange also highlighted the importance of strengthening engagement between Europe 🇪🇺 and Asia 🌏, fostering greater understanding across cultures, and creating new platforms for cooperation at a time when constructive dialogue is needed more than ever.
We are deeply grateful to President Fischer, Monika Froehler, and Kathrin Ebner for their wisdom, insight, and commitment to a more peaceful and cooperative world. Conversations such as these remind us that while the challenges before us are global, so too is our capacity to address them — together.

A pleasure to meet HE Edit Szilágyiné Bátorfi the Ambassador of Hungary 🇭🇺 to Austria 🇦🇹. A diplomat with an illustrious track record. We had a thoughtful exchange on the state of our world and the polycrises that increasingly define our era.
We discussed the profound challenges confronting humanity—from geopolitical fragmentation and conflict to climate change, inequality, and declining trust in institutions. The conclusion was clear: effective multilateralism is not a luxury; it is an urgent necessity. The threats we face are increasingly existential in nature and demand collective responses that transcend borders, ideologies, and sectors.
I was pleased to brief the Ambassador on the work of Global Neighbours, including our Tracks to the Future initiative and our commitment to strengthening Track II diplomacy. In a world 🌎 where formal channels are often constrained, trusted dialogue, bridge-building, and people-to-people engagement have never been more important.
The future will be shaped not only by governments, but also by the ability of citizens, civil society, philanthropy, business, and thought leaders to work together across divides. The time to invest in these connections is now.
