Gen Z Israelis grew up hearing that Iranians hated them. Then Operation Roaring Lion came. And something unexpected happened.

Many Israelis realized the people cheering for them online from Tehran, Shiraz, and Isfahan weren't their enemies.

סוגנד פאחרי @sogandsf, אנליסטית במרכז הירושלמי לענייני חוץ וביטחון, אומרת כי להחלטת המשטר האיראני להחזיר חלקית את הגישה לאינטרנט לאחר עשרות ימי ניתוק יש גם מניע כלכלי ברור. בתגובה לשאלתו של תא״ל (מיל׳) חנן גפן, לשעבר מפקד יחידה 8200, הסבירה כי עסקים רבים באיראן תלויים כיום בתקשורת מקוונת ובמסחר דיגיטלי. "הרבה איראנים מתעסקים בסחר אונליין, כמו בכל העולם, ולכן לניתוק ממושך יש מחיר כלכלי כבד", אמרה.

עם זאת, פאחרי מדגישה כי השיקול הכלכלי אינו עומד לבדו. לדבריה, המשטר האיראני מודע מאוד לדעת הקהל במערב ומנסה לשדר תדמית מתונה ואנושית יותר בעיצומו של המשבר. "מאוד חשוב לרפובליקה האסלאמית להיראות אנושית, למרות אופיו האכזרי של המשטר", היא אומרת. לדבריה, החזרת האינטרנט נועדה לא רק להקל על הלחץ הפנימי, אלא גם לשפר את תדמית המשטר כלפי חוץ בזמן שהמו״מ עם המערב נמשך.

In 1983, an Israeli official lived in Beirut for nearly 2 years trying to build trade ties with Lebanon.

They moved millions of dollars of goods through the border. Lebanese businessmen met openly with Israelis. They even tried organizing an Israeli fashion show in Beirut.

The Lebanese army stopped it because it was “too much normalization.”

Feels unreal today, but this is the story of Dan Catarivas, who tells @BaligSladeen there was a brief moment when Israelis and Lebanese genuinely believed peace and normal relations were possible.

While the World Negotiates, the Iranian People Are Left to Die

@sogandsf, analyst at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, sharply criticizes the West and renewed negotiations with Iran while, she says, the Iranian people continue paying the price. “While world leaders sign deals and hold press conferences, the Iranian people are still waiting for freedom,” she writes.

Fakheri stresses that contrary to the image often portrayed abroad, the Iranian public is overwhelmingly united against the regime and willing to pay a heavy price to overthrow it. She also criticizes international support for Hamas and the silence surrounding Iranian suffering: “Iranians may be the only people in the world calling on a foreign military to strike their own country, because for them the enemy is the regime, not the bombers.”
