KRA slashes consolidated cargo charges by approximately Ksh 500,000:
President Ruto met small traders at State House on Sept 2, 2026, and ordered a reduction in the consolidated cargo benchmark from Sh3.2M to Sh2M following protests by traders in Kamukunji, Gikomba, and Nyamakima .
Key changes:
- General consolidated cargo benchmark cut to Sh2M
- Excludes ready-made garments, footwear, and fabrics (rates unchanged)
- Air cargo rates remain unchanged
Background: KRA had raised the minimum customs benchmark from Sh2.5M to Sh3.2M on August 20, 2026 a 28% hike sparking protests . Small traders warned the increase would erode margins and threaten business survival .
Additional relief: Kenya Railways slashed charges for moving cargo from ICD to Bomaline De-consolidation Centre from Sh58,000 to Sh10,000

Kenya's econimmic zone bill proposes major overhaul:
The Kenya Economic Zones Bill, 2026, currently before Parliament, would merge EPZA & SEZA into a single Kenya Economic Zones Authority simplifying regulation and reducing bureaucracy.
Key Changes:
- Sh5B minimum investment threshold stakeholders warn this could lock out SMEs, start-ups, and innovation-driven businesses. State Department for Investment Promotion now supports a tiered system based on enterprise size.
- Domestic sales overhaul SEZ enterprises could sell 100% of output domestically, while EPZ enterprises retain a 20% cap, a game changer for manufacturers wanting both incentives and local market access.
- Target sectors: manufacturing, technology, agribusiness, oil & gas, industrial parks
The bill builds on a $2.9B (Sh375B) investment pipeline expected to create 63,000+ jobs.
