If you run into something that isn't covered by the upgrade documentation, please let us know! We've done our best to mention everything, but everyone who helped write and proofread the guide is only human after all.
Well, we *think* we're all humanโฆ! โ @hidgw
Sopel 8.0.0 has landed!
See the changelog at https://t.co/H2FHLLuAt5 and don't forget to check out the upgrade guide: https://t.co/ezj2k1DREW
Thank you all for your patience during this extended release-preparation phase!
Don't know if any of our followers are still here, but in case you are:
The `ip` plugin that has shipped with Sopel for a while will lose its ability to download GeoIP files soon.
`sopel-iplookup` from PyPI will be updated, so update to that if you haven't.
We'll likely launch 8.0.0 before all website updates are done, just to get the new version out there for everyone using Python 3.11+. (We know there are a growing number of compatibility problems with 7.x and newer Pythons!)
We're definitely in the home stretch for Sopel 8.0. @[email protected] has put in a good couple evenings on changelog drafts, and soon @[email protected] will take over for finishing touches.
We noticed that some ideas we have for 8.1+ would be a lot easier to implement if the old `bot.register_url_callback()` method & friends were removed.
In the 7.0 upgrade guide & 7.x docs, they're set to be removed in Sopel 9. Would you mind if we deleted them early, in 8.0?

We're actively exploring options for keeping Sopel's Twitter plugin working. Ping us in #sopel at Libera if you want to help, or hop on the GitHub issue:

Work on a migration to Twitter API v2 has, for obvious reasons, stopped.
Sopel 7.1.9 is out today, just a small bugfix release for the `tell` and `search` plugins.
Yes, @github backtracked on suddenly killing their link shortener this week. We figured we might as well release an update anyway, just with less rushing.

Sopel v7.1.7 is now available. Details here: https://t.co/SDE39DErRZ
Bug fixes aside, we'd like to remind everyone using Sopel to avoid Python 3.9.8. Full context at https://t.co/zGTlXkXk0B and subsequent tweets in that thread.
We are aware of a regression in Python 3.9.8 that could affect Sopel's command-line interface.
The relevant Python issue thread (https://t.co/o0uQLgGNLk) expresses an intent to revert. We will have patches ready in case the revert does not happen.
Python 3.9.9 was released in a hurry to address this, though we didn't tweet about that.
We are tracking the potential impact of any further related changes by the Python team in our own issue, https://t.co/666iq0fhzv

This regression also affects much larger projects such as @AzureCli (https://t.co/sbndzJdTtt), which will help it get attention from Python leadership more quickly.
Got a few more bug fixes for y'all in Sopel 7.1.6, live now and ready to install via your favorite PyPI client!

(Does anyone actually use something other than pip? Serious question.)
A couple small bug fixes just came out in Sopel v7.1.5, now ready and waiting on a PyPI server near you!
Anyone still running Sopel on old hosts that didn't like the @letsencrypt X3 cert expiration? See links in the changelog.

@hulu_support Subtitle timing issue starts around 4 mins into https://t.co/GHG6uD1f0Z (Stargate Atlantis 5x15) - the lines are several seconds early.
I guess all of Stargate is about to expire in a week, but still, please pass along to whoever provided the subs.
Sopel 7.1.4 is rolling out now on PyPI!

We waited a few weeks since the last patch, but there was only one more reported bug to fix.
We'll keep working on version 8 now!
