This is the most inspirational story at this World Cup.
A 40 year old goalkeeper and a team that found one of its defenders through a LinkedIn DM.
A reminder that you can start from absolutely anywhere.
Let me tell you what happened, the story is a wild ride.
Yesterday, Cabo Verde played their first ever World Cup match. If you cannot find Cabo Verde on a map, you are not alone. It is a tiny cluster of islands off the coast of Africa with about 5 lakh people.
That is smaller than many of our towns, here in India. They are the second smallest country to ever reach a World Cup, and they did it just 50 years after becoming an independent nation.
They call themselves the Blue Sharks.
Their first opponent? Spain. The reigning European champions, ranked #2 in the world, with stars worth hundreds of crores sitting on the bench.
Everyone expected Spain to win 4-0 or 5-0. Instead, Cabo Verde held them to 0-0. Spain took 27 shots and could not score a single one.
And the man who made it happen is who I keep thinking about.
His name is Vozinha. He is 40 years old. He made seven saves against Spain and did not let a single ball past him. He became the oldest goalkeeper in World Cup history to keep a clean sheet on his debut.
Vozinha plays his club football in the second division of Portugal. The second division. He was raised by his grandparents, who gave him his nickname. His own mother could not even watch him play live, because of a visa problem that stopped her travelling.
This is a man in his 40s, playing in a lower league, who waited his entire life for one moment on the biggest stage. And when it finally came, he was ready.
After the match he said he had dreamed of this his whole life and worked his whole life for it. He woke up that morning with a few thousand followers. He went to bed with millions.
The team around him is just as mad a story.
Cabo Verde is a tiny nation, so they did something clever. There are more Cabo Verdean families living abroad than on the islands themselves.
So they went hunting for players with Cabo Verdean blood all over the world. Players born in Portugal, in Ireland, anywhere they could find them.
The best example is a defender called Roberto Lopes. He was born in Ireland. He had a normal office job, working in a bank as a mortgage adviser, playing part time football on the side.
One day he got a message on LinkedIn, of all places. It was the Cabo Verde coach asking if he wanted to play for the national team, because his father was Cape Verdean.
The message was in Portuguese, so Lopes assumed it was spam and ignored it completely.
Nine months later, the coach messaged again. This time Lopes copied it into Google Translate, finally understood it, and said yes.
That same man, found on LinkedIn, a former bank employee, started against Spain yesterday and made 13 clearances to protect that clean sheet. A random LinkedIn message turned a bank worker into a World Cup footballer. Crazy.
Now, why am I telling you all this.
Because we tell ourselves so many lies about why we cannot start.
> I am too old.
> I am from a small place.
> Nobody knows me.
> I do not have the right background.
> I already missed my chance.
And then a 40 year old keeper from a second division club, and a defender recruited off LinkedIn, walk onto the biggest stage in sport and hold mighty Spain to a draw.
We have our own version of this story.
Pravin Tambe played club cricket in Mumbai for over 20 years. No first class career. No fame. Just a man who kept turning up season after season.
He made his IPL debut at 41. Forty one. An age when most cricketers have already retired and moved into the commentary box. He went on to take a hat trick and became a crowd favourite. They even made a film on him called Kaun Pravin Tambe, which literally means "who is Pravin Tambe."
These people are not the most gifted in the room.
They are just the most patient. They keep showing up long after everyone around them assumed it was over. And when one door finally cracked open, they were fit, ready and willing to run straight through it.
You do not need to be young. You do not need to be famous. You do not need to be from the right city or the right family. You just need to keep doing the work while nobody is watching, so that you are ready on the day someone finally looks.
Vozinha spent 40 years getting ready for the luck.
So whatever it is that you keep telling yourself you are too old, or too late, or too small to even try, think about a goalkeeper from a 5 lakh person island who just shut out Spain, and a banker who became a World Cup player because he opened a message on LinkedIn.
Start the thing. Keep showing up. Stay ready, so that when your one match arrives, you do not fumble it.
Because sometimes you really can just do things. :)
Prayed for days like these since years..so good to see #RCB play and behave like the champions they are!! Years of tears and now Back to back champions!!! King Kohli on fire!! What a team! Bhuvi insane! What a captain in Patidar!! @RCBTweets@imVkohli@rrjjt_01#IPLfinal2026

#StrayDogs #SupremeCourt
In shock reading this…I literally cannot find the words to express my anger, horror, pain.. He deserves the worst possible punishment along with the landlord & relative
#Gujarat | A shocking case has come to light from Morbi, where a man allegedly allowed his landlord and a relative of the landlord to repeatedly rape his wife and 13-year-old daughter, as he could not pay his rent.
