This land of such dear souls, this dear, dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out—I die pronouncing it—
Like to a tenement or pelting farm.
England, bound in with the triumphant sea,
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds.
That England that was wont to conquer others
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.
@DarthStalin1975@b_legeny@Drednotyandmore They were built under the restrictions of the Second London Naval Treaty, which limited the main armament of Battleships to 14". By the time the escalator clause was triggered, completing them with 16" guns would have delayed them by 18 months, and they were needed ASAP.
@Aris_Utensil They talk as if Europeans are holding those American troops hostage, and that America is somehow incapable of ordering their own military to return home.
@AcademicAgent_X Sabbath all the way down at 39 is absolutely disgusting tbh. U2 also definitely don't belong in front of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin or The Velvet Underground.
@Disillu24643967@eugyppius1 >tfw no comfy anglo-german alliance
Imagine how good the music would be. The kino Shakespeare and Wagner productions. The alcohol. The warships. THE TRAINS WE COULD HAVE BUILT.
Together we could even have outdone the fr*nch in terms of (tasteful) sexual deviance... wahnsinn...
@Aris_Utensil Lmao, what a unique, devious and EVIL strategy: don't just let your enemies walk in and blow up your most important weapons. Only a real pariah state would use 8d chess like this
Trump is worn out.
I'm calling it now, they're dropping him for Vance after the midterms. They want(ed?) to use the first half of his term to accomplish unpopular foreign policy goals (Iran, Venezuela) so that it wouldn't tarnish Vance after he takes over.
.@afneil I’m not a naval expert, just grew up in a naval family. That’s why I have been writing about the bipartisan ruination of the navy for many, many years. I’m glad you’ve discovered it, but it matters to me that navy supporters get their terminology right.
@eugyppius1@Chimpin82 Oh, and there are also idioms that only make sense if you read 'carpet' as meaning 'rug': "to sweep something under the carpet", meaning to hide a problem instead of actually fixing it.
@eugyppius1@Chimpin82 Generally, a carpet covers the entire floor and is fixed, while a rug doesn't and isn't.
However, very large red rugs that are used to welcome important people are called carpets, as are rugs that have magical powers (such as the ability to fly).
Ours is an intuitive language.
