We are saddened to learn of the passing of Ted Turner, a speech & debate alum and a dedicated champion of the activity. Not only was Ted a longtime supporter of speech & debate, he was an honorary NSDA member and in 1988 he was named Communicator of the Year at the Nationals.

The event was introduced in 2002 and was originally called “Ted Turner Debate,” reflecting his influence, with its crossfire format modeled after his CNN program Crossfire.
