The Chesty Lions are off to a strong 3-1 start, and this season feels like the beginning of a new chapter for Lawrence football. The Lions were once a state championship program, and now, the seniors say that mindset started to take shape over the summer. They’ve carried it through every early-morning practice, every film session and every game. Led by head coach Jason Thoren, Lawrence is looking to keep that momentum rolling as they face Shawnee Mission South tomorrow. Emma Hale of SIK stopped by their practice this afternoon and caught up with Senior Adrick Webb, Senior Ethan Curry, Senior Alex Bart, Coach Thoren, Junior Joey Dooley, Senior Caleb Wingerd, & Junior Truth Pope. Colton Smithhisler is having a huge senior cross country season for St. Mary’s Colgan!

Smithhisler currently owns the #1 time in Class 2A by more than 20 seconds, continuing a steady climb throughout his high school career.

His finishes at the State Cross Country Championships:
2023: 60th, 2024: 15th, 2025: 12th

He carried that success onto the track this past spring, placing 5th in the 3200 at the 2026 state meet, along with appearances in the 4x800, 1600 and 800.

His resume also includes: 2025 2A Regional XC Champion, 2025 CNC League XC Runner-Up, 2026 CNC League Champion ,4x800, 1600 & 3200, 2025 Academic All-State, and a Member of Colgan’s 2026 Scholar’s Bowl State Runner-Up team

Now Smithhisler enters the heart of his senior XC season as Class 2A’s fastest runner so far in 2026.

Congrats to Bowe Behymer of Holton Middle/High School on being named the KIAAA AD of the Week by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. KIAAA - Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association

Behymer is in his second year as Holton’s Athletic/Activities Director after a career that has included teaching and coaching stops at Rossville, Buhler and Bonneville High School in Ogden, Utah.

A Beloit native and three-sport high school athlete, Behymer went on to play baseball at Washburn University. Athletics have remained a major part of his life, including coaching football and wrestling at multiple stops before moving into athletic administration.

“Being the Athletic Director at Holton means a lot to me because of the pride this community has in its schools and athletic programs,” Behymer said. “Holton is a place where people show up for our kids, support one another, and take pride in being a Wildcat.”

Behymer’s leadership philosophy centers around competition, relationships and accountability. Two phrases that have stuck with him throughout his career are “Every Rep Counts” and “Nobody Cares. Work Harder.”

While winning matters, Behymer believes the bigger purpose of high school athletics is preparing students for life through hard work, handling adversity, being a good teammate and representing their school and community the right way.

His first year as an AD came with a unique challenge. His wife Savanna was still completing her medical residency in Utah, requiring Behymer to regularly travel between Kansas and Salt Lake City while learning a new position and supporting his family.

Behymer credits Savanna and the Holton community, administration, staff and Board of Education for helping make it work. Now having Savanna and their daughter Beni with him in Holton makes the journey even more meaningful.

Looking ahead, Behymer hopes to continue building on Holton’s strong athletic tradition while supporting coaches, improving facilities and creating great experiences for Wildcat student-athletes.

Mulvane knocks off previously unbeaten Wamego 41-40 in a thriller. Jason Lamb caught up with head coach Daniel Myears.

The Wildcats went for TWO late, and Hays Ensley hauled in the conversion pass to give Mulvane the lead. Then, with just 33 seconds remaining, Ensley picked off Logan Fulton to seal it!

Ensley unofficially finishes with 230 yards and 4 touchdowns on the night.

Mulvane moves to 3-1 and hands Wamego its first loss of the season in just the second-ever meeting between the two programs.

They are three-time defending WAC Champions and once again look to be a team to watch in Western Kansas. Looking ahead to this weekend, the Panthers will travel to Washburn Rural High School to compete in a tough 4A/5A/6A tournament, where they will face strong competition from across the state. Senior Kya Behr has committed to continue her volleyball career at Washburn University and will have an exciting weekend ahead as she looks to break a couple of career records. Macksville Football (8M Division II 🏈) is off to a 3-0 start this season under first-year head coach Jeff Savage. The Mustangs are off to their best start in several years after not recording a win since 2022. Savage has helped bring new energy to the program, and Macksville has quickly turned things around to start the 2026 season. Rylee Hackmann of Sports in Kansas was in Macksville today and caught up with Head Coach Jeff Savage, along with Sr. Nolan Adams, So. Stafford Football (8M Div II 🏈) is led by head coach Jeff Chambers. 3 games into this season and the Trojans have a 3-0 start to the season, and winning one more game than they did last year. Leading the team through out the games is the quarter back Jace Kreutzer and kicker Leone Boldt. Spring Hill (5A🏈3-0) has a really talented group of athletes under HC Fred Bouchard and they have started off on fire winning the first 3 games. They take on Basehor-Linwood this week in a big 5A matchup. The Broncos look to stay undefeated and keep playing great football this week.

Stafford is off to a 3-0 start this season after finishing the season last 2-7. They will play Sylan Lucas who is also 3-0 so far this season tomorrow night.

Ingalls (1A-II🏐) is ranked third in KVA, have been overly consistent in 1A-II with a couple of third place state finishes. While star player Olivia Stein is gone to Wichita State, Ingalls features one of the best 1A-II players in Kansas in senior Jill Schmeeckle. She could make the rare milestone of 1,000 assists, 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills to be one of the most complete players in Kansas this season. We were in town to catch up with her and we will hear from her tonight along with head coach Bulma Galaviz. #sportsinkansas
