He Defended Himself Against The Death Penalty

Former Florida plastic surgeon Tomasz Kosowski made the extraordinary decision to represent himself in a first-degree murder trial where prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Kosowski was accused of murdering attorney Steven Cozzi, who vanished from his law office in March 2023 while representing defendants in a bitter civil lawsuit brought by Kosowski. Cozzi left behind his phone, wallet, keys and car, while investigators discovered his blood inside a bathroom at the office. His body has never been found.

Prosecutors built their case through a massive trail of circumstantial and forensic evidence. Surveillance footage allegedly showed Kosowski arriving with a large box and later struggling to wheel a heavily loaded cart from the building. Cozzi's blood was found in Kosowski's truck and garage, investigators tracked his movements through cellphone and surveillance data, and searches on his devices included information about Cozzi and the paralytic drug succinylcholine.

When Kosowski was arrested, police also discovered approximately $280,000 in cash alongside masks, syringes, duct tape, a stun gun, a vial of succinylcholine and other equipment. Yet Kosowski called no witnesses, presented no defense case and instead personally argued that the prosecution's theory was physically impossible.

After hearing the evidence and Kosowski's own defense, Judge Joseph Bulone deliberated for roughly 15 minutes before finding Tomasz Kosowski guilty of first-degree murder.
