De la Zerda: Photoacoustic molecular imaging seemed quite crazy at first. We had a very hard time finding funding at first.

De la Zerda: With this technique, we can see parts of the tumor that we can't see with the naked eye. And we can leave the healthy tissue.

De la Zerda: The injection lights up the tumor for the surgeon. The light guides the surgeon so that he doesn't leave cancer behind.

De la Zerda: If you give a mouse an injection, you can see on an MRI where the brain cancer is.

De la Zerda: So I developed nanoparticles that could bind to cancer cells and help us recognize where tumors are to guide the brain surgery.

De la Zerda: And you only get one bite at the apple. It's very difficult to go back if you leave cancer cells behind with brain tumors.

De la Zerda: Do you operate conservatively, leaving hefty margins around the tumor? Then you leave cancer cells behind.

De la Zerda: Brain cancer is very difficult. All the tissue looks the same - healthy tissue, tumors. So very hard to remove tumors.
