Katlego Makuwa was a 19-year-old student at Westcol TVET College (Carletonville Campus) in Gauteng, South Africa. She was an N4 Engineering student pursuing her studies while staying in student accommodation in Carletonville.
What Happened: On 25 May 2025, her lifeless body was discovered in her student accommodation. Reports indicate she was found in a pool of blood. It is alleged that she was brutally raped and then murdered.
The incident occurred in the housing where she was staying as a student. The caretaker of the accommodation was alleged to have been involved in the crime.
Early social media reports (around early June 2025) sometimes noted that no arrests had been made yet and called for the caretaker’s immediate arrest, while later posts confirmed an arrest had taken place. This is consistent with how such cases often happen: initial public outrage and pressure on police, followed by an arrest.
The case sparked significant outrage across South Africa, particularly among students, women’s rights groups, and activists highlighting gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide. Organizations like the South African Students Congress (SASCO) mourned her death and used it to call attention to safety issues in student housing. Memorial services and tributes were held, and she was laid to rest in early June 2025.
Current Status (as of 2026)
Detailed follow-up information on the court case, trial proceedings, or conviction is limited in publicly available mainstream coverage. This is unfortunately common in many GBV cases in South Africa unless they receive sustained national media attention. The case continues to be referenced in activism around violence against women
This was a deeply tragic and violent incident that affected her family, fellow students, and the wider community. It underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of young women in student residences and the prevalence of GBV.

Uyinene Mrwetyana was a 19-year-old first-year student at the University of Cape Town, studying Film and Media. She went to the Clareinch Post Office to collect a parcel after being asked by an employee to return later that day. That was the last time she was seen.
Instead of assisting her, the employee, Luyanda Botha, lured her into a restricted area where he brutally raped and murdered her. He then attempted to conceal and destroy evidence of the crime.
Her disappearance triggered a week-long search involving her family, friends, students, and the broader public, with widespread social media appeals under hashtags such as #FindUyinene. The discovery of her body and the details surrounding her death shocked the nation and reignited urgent conversations about the crisis of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
Mass protests followed across the country, with citizens demanding accountability and systemic change, chanting slogans such as “Am I next?” and “Enough is enough.” Women, in particular, shared their lived experiences, highlighting the daily risks they face and calling for stronger action from law enforcement, government, and society at large.
Luyanda Botha was subsequently arrested, confessed in court, and received multiple life sentences for his crimes, along with additional penalties for attempting to obstruct justice. The case drew widespread national and international attention and remains a painful reminder of the urgent need to address gender-based violence.
i think it is weird that the whole internet is consistently monitoring some monkey in a zoo to the point of calling for mass reviews so it gets a fucking tree but completely ignores Human Babies being kiIIed for sport on the daily
Kwakhanya Mhlanganisi, 16, was allegedly murdered by two teenagers in Site C, Khayelitsha, on 4 December 2025. It is alleged that Kwakhanya was murdered in a homophobic attack, as he was part of the queer community.
It is alleged that two teenagers attempted to rob him, and after an initial altercation, the group reportedly chased after Kwakhanya, assaulted him with a brick, and then placed a bucket over his body and set it alight, causing severe burns. Kwakhanya later succumbed to his injuries.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder. Another suspect, also believed to be a teenager, has not yet been arrested. This hate crime once again highlights the horrific realities faced by the LGBTQI+ community. We are heartbroken by the loss of yet another beautiful soul. When is enough, enough? #WomenForChange #UnburyTheTruth

in south africa, a woman is murdered every 2.25 hours, a woman is raped every 12 minutes, a girl child is sexually assaulted every 17 minutes. you are statistically more likely to be raped than to be employed, especially if you are a woman in this country.
So many don't know what is happening in Tigray. Women and girls in Tigray are being tortured, gang raped, and either forced into pregnancy to carry Ethiopian & Eritrean soldiers' children or having their reproductive systems destroyed through the insertion of foreign objects.
