@amir and I take you inside last week’s all hands at OpenAI, where CEO Sam Altman outlines 3 industry proposals for pacing the rate of AI development:
- IAEA for AI
- The Demis plan (CERN for AI)
- The Eliezer plan (“melt everyone else’s GPUs”)

We spoke with senior Defense official Emil Michael on Friday, who told us that the Trump administration has a range of options, including export controls, if AI companies do not cooperate with the government.
He also told us:
- His public feud with Anthropic will not get in the way of his new duties as Super Intelligence Task Force vice chair, where he is tasked with working with AI companies to develop an incident reporting framework ("If that means I’m talking to someone who’s suing me, well then I’m talking to them")
- The Defense Department will continue to bar Anthropic as long as it has a "moral principle" embedded in its software that allows its models to exert control over humans
- Frontier labs are acting like "drunk drivers" who demand someone else pull them over when they call for stricter government regulation
- The Office of Strategic Capital is exploring further investment into microelectronics and drone part companies
- He's worried about Chinese open-source dominance and foreign employees with split loyalities but doesn't think the answer is more government control
- He hasn't seen any reports on whether AI-enabled software failures from Palantir contributed to a U.S. missile strike on Iran in February that killed more than 150 people, including at least 123 children ("I’m not as online as I used to be.")

Great piece from @graceihle on data blunders at SpaceX/Cursor, including worries that the company had accidentally used customer/supplier data as model training data due to Cursor engineers' usage of Grok Bot.

OpenAI’s Sora could be coming back…ish. A stealthy startup cofounded by Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and ex Sora lead Bill Peebles is in talks with OpenAI to tweak and sell the model to film studios.

Exclusive: Jensen Huang's dealmaking machine ran non-stop the past summer–buying Hugging Face, backstopping a giant OpenAI data center, investing in a range of AI startups and infrastructure firms.
Huang sure kept his team (and reporters😉) very busy. But what's driving this historic spree is a leader who lives in constant anxiety about Nvidia's future.

A NY City Council hearing yesterday was more theater than anything else. But, amidst all the hubbub, whistleblower researchers had interesting things to say about how quickly AI research is being automated.

@leomschwartz & I are at City Hall today for a hearing on AI risks, w/ reps from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google & Meta, plus whistleblowers like Jacob Coxon.
Last week, OpenAI sent a letter to NY City Council recommending safeguards ahead of the hearing.
