Firefighters quickly contained two separate kitchen fires in high-rise apartment buildings over the past two days, preventing both incidents from spreading beyond the units of origin.
The first incident occurred yesterday morning at approximately 07:25, when the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting a kitchen fire in an apartment in the 2000 block of Draper Avenue.
Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and observed black smoke coming from a fifth-floor balcony. Crews quickly made their way to the fifth floor where they encountered heavy smoke conditions. The fire unit was located and Firefighters made entry, confirming heavy flames in the kitchen.
Firefighters immediately began extinguishment efforts while conducting searches of the unit. The fire was declared under control at 07:42 and was contained to the kitchen.
Two complete searches of the apartment confirmed there were no residents inside. A cat that had been reported missing was located by Firefighters in a bathtub. The animal was safely brought outside, provided oxygen, and reunited with its owner.
Residual smoke was ventilated from the building and air quality was monitored until it was deemed safe for residents to return to their units. Victim Services attended to assist three adults displaced from the affected unit. No injuries were reported.
The second incident occurred today at approximately 11:03, when the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting smoke coming from a sixth-floor apartment in the 700 block of Springland Drive. The caller indicated they were unsure if anyone was inside the unit.
Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and quickly proceeded to the sixth floor of the seven-storey apartment building. Crews encountered black smoke in the hallways on both the fifth and sixth floors while locating the affected unit.
Upon entry, Firefighters confirmed a pot had been left on the stove. The fire was extinguished and declared under control at 11:50.
The occupant of the unit sustained burns to their hands and was assessed and treated by Firefighters in the lobby, including the administration of oxygen. Care was then transferred to our partners at @OttawaParamedic.
Two complete searches of the unit confirmed no other occupants were inside.
Residual smoke was ventilated from the building and air quality was monitored until it was deemed safe for residents to return to their units. An @OttFire Investigator attended the scene.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 13:21, leaving the scene in the control of @OttawaPolice. #OttNews
Firefighters contained an apartment fire to the unit of origin yesterday in Kanata.
At approx. 12:02, we received a call from a monitoring company reporting active fire alarms at a two storey multi-unit residential complex in the 200 block of Penfield Dr. Firefighters arrived on scene 2min after being dispatched to the call and were met with contractors who flagged them to the back of the structure where black smoke was coming from the window and the door of one of the ground floor units where they were working. Firefighters began a fast attack and advanced a hose line to the unit. It was confirmed there were no occupants inside the unit. The fire was located on the wall near the door and the window and was quickly extinguished and brought under control at 12:08, 4min after arriving on scene and before it could spread. Firefighters pulled the soffit on the exterior of the unit to check for any fire extension and none was found. The smoke had migrated through the first floor hallway so Firefighters began ventilation operations using high pressurized fans to remove it out of the structure. Once the smoke was removed, Firefighters checked the units one by one to make sure there was no smoke inside any of them. Three units on the first floor close to the fire unit were found with smoke inside them and it was removed. Multiple units above the fire unit also had smoke inside them and it was also removed by fire crews. The air quality was monitored and was confirmed to be safe before allowing all the residents to return to their units at 13:42. At 13:44, a "firewatch" was set up to have a pump remain on scene to monitor for any flare ups. There are no reported injuries. #OttNews
