"The pleats are iron teeth.
They close around her hips.
Six yards of starched cotton
draw her upright—
a coffin of cloth,
stiff with hair oil,
sour with old sweat."

I remember my Thanksgiving poem being pinned to the school bulletin board, where everyone could see it, and leaves cut out of orange construction paper were stapled all around it. It is the one poem I am still trying to write.
