On 28 Jan 1918, a Gotha bomber, returning from attacking London, was seen over Leyton. Sopwith Camels from 44 Squadron RFC at Hainault, piloted by Captain George Hackwill and 2nd Lt Charles Banks, forced it down over Wickford. The British pilots received the Military Cross
