Chicago appeared to be a perfect host city for the 2026 World Cup.
But when Rahm Emanuel, the city’s 55th mayor, scrutinized FIFA’s hosting agreement, he turned away. Emanuel believed the proposal left 'Chicago taxpayers as the dumb money at the table'.
It also included the right to request a dome being built over Soldier Field, which proved the final straw.
Eight years on, he hasn't changed his mind.

My one Bears take is that basically every team that has left its city center is worse off for it. I think the Jets and Giants playing in Jersey leaves them more disconnected from the city/region than they should be. Same with SF. You just get less juice, unfortunately.
Regarding Rome comments:
With many foot stress fractures, especially in high-level athletes, the body creates extra bone and scar tissue (sometimes referred to as callus formation) around the fracture site during healing. While that's a normal part of recovery, it can slightly alter the shape, stiffness, or mechanics of the foot. Now over time the foot CAN be reshaped close to, if not back to, it's original form but it is not guaranteed.
-The fracture has healed and he's able to play.
-He isn't necessarily dealing with ongoing pain.
-The structure of the foot is now a little different than it was pre-injury.
-Because of those changes, the way the foot moves, loads, and feels is different.
-Rather than waiting for it to feel exactly like it did before the fracture, he's accepted that this is his "new normal."
For football players, this is actually pretty common after significant foot stress fractures. The goal is often not to make the foot feel exactly like it did before the injury, but to restore enough strength, mobility, and load tolerance that the athlete can perform at a high level without symptoms or increased risk of reinjury. A player can be fully cleared and highly effective while still noticing that the injured foot feels different than the uninjured side.

Brandon Johnson notes the ingress/egress of Soldier Field must be fixed.
"Let me tell you how bad it is — Bears vs. Packers, I'm at the game, we're losing," he says. "I decide to leave to beat the traffic. Before I get out of the footprint, the Bears had come back to win."
While Rome Odunze's foot has healed from the stress fracture he played through last season, making sure he stays on top of his rehab/straightening his feet is something that will be a constant from here on out.
Odunze: "This is my new normal. And it’s not from a standpoint that I’m always in pain but the way my foot broke there’s callouses in there that like creates a different type of foot structure with those bones—different types of things that kind of shift things around. So my new normal was kind of what I am going into. And I don’t think that’s anything that’s going to prohibit me from making plays but I feel like with the break it’s just like when you tear your AC, it’s never really back to normal."
Look man, this debacle is 90/10 on the Bears third generation majority owners and I’ve spent three years pointing out they don’t have any of the relevant experience to make wherever they build thrive.
This isn’t a 50/50 blame situation.
The Bears leaving Chicago is the mistake of the century. That’s mostly on the city, I can accept that
Tons of their fans live in Arlington Heights
It still feels like Chicagoland
I realize the McCaskeys are a whole clan of failsons but they can’t move to Indiana for a buck
I have no idea how the Bears are going to fill that hammond, Indiana stadium for NON football related events. Are big acts going to want to play there? My guess is no. 8 Homes games is not enough to pay the bills people. Arlington Heights has the Train line which drops you right off at the front door. Filling that stadium would be 10x easier. This would be the mistake of the century to move across state lines @chicagobears@WaddleandSilvy
Sen. Bill Cunningham, the lead Senate negotiator: “We also have members of the Chicago caucus who’d like to find some sort of path where the city of Chicago would also have the ability to compete for a stadium.”
Ben Johnson’s #Bears are worlds ahead of where they were last year at this time. Expect another exponential jump from Caleb Williams and the offense this season…
