Animation is a lot of work.
Sketching. Sculpting. Voice acting. Refining. Revising. And for this one, getting real people to act as animation references. A lot of steps between the first idea and what eventually reaches your screen.
Here’s one of those journeys.
Ever wondered where some of the ideas in our games come from?
Quite often, from life itself. In Hay Day, inspiration comes from all over the world. Oktoberfest themes were shaped by a German artist’s hometown. Indian colleagues helped shape festival events. And the Valley’s country-themed decorations bring pieces of local culture into the game.
There’s a lot of thought behind making each one feel true to the place it represents. Some details are easy to spot. Others you might have to look twice for.
Not every Clash character fits into the Arena.
Royale's original fantasy theme already included a sketch for a dragon. Later, when the team looked to bring the Dragon from Clash of Clans into Royale, they ran into one problem: its wings blocked too much of the battlefield.
“So we twisted it into a baby version. The Baby Dragon is essentially a loyal pet of the Royals.”
The Clash of Clans swimsuit photos got a lot of love last summer. Unfortunately, we ran out of them. We figured this was a reasonable alternative. Enjoy.
Back when the team was figuring out what Brawl Stars should look like, this was the vision:
"Simple flow lines, light details, graphical, toon-shaded, 'vectory' – think vinyl decals and rub-on tattoos. Something you could draw on a notebook. Definitely playful and energetic."

“We were in the process of redoing characters and had started to work on a cherry blossom Spike that was based on an earlier pink skin concept. It turned out that our Korean team had also played around with the same theme, as players love the character so much. It felt like a no-brainer! Spike is cool and lovable but also kinda weird, which fits well with the Sakura storyline.”
