They may appear sudden to you now, but concerned citizens had been raising the issue since the 1990s, when it was first noticed that some parents were cheering their little children to gyrate suggestively with vulgar Bollywood songs at wedding parties and family occasions. There are multiple videos of reality shows for kids telecast 20 or 30 years ago where judges — often members of the film fraternity — are seen stopping the performances in the middle and telling the contestants that the songs were not appropriate for their age group. I read columns in progressive newspapers like The Times of India (claiming to stand for the youth always) that said such developments in society were disturbing and not cool.

It’s those children who have grown up to be the uncultured boors you see in the CJP protests now.

I do not condone corporal punishment by parents or teachers. In the case of disciplining a girl, hitting her is a condemnable act and totally forbidden. Besides, the mother here seems to have skipped the daughter's crucial growing-up years when a firm verbal rebuke would have brought her back on track.

But this video, not related to the CJP protests, is an indication that society is waking up to its own mistake of careless and callous upbringing of children. Any corporal punishment meted out by elders now betrays their own frustration at not noticing their children turning uncouth 5 or 10 years before it was too late for corrections.

After the Prime Minister appealed for forgiveness towards those who crossed every line of civility during the protests at Jantar Mantar, and we have all seen the videos of who those so-called “students” were, the usual ecosystem predictably swung into action.

Suddenly, there was a coordinated chorus claiming, “They are citizens, not his daughters.” Others, like Yogendra Yadav, delivered lectures about “infantilising” young people.

Please spare us the sermons.

This is the same Prime Minister who, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, urged parents to ask their sons where they were at night instead of policing only their daughters. His concern has never been selective. It has always been about the responsibility of society towards its young.

That is the difference between a statesman and career politicians.

A statesman understands that children and young people are the nation’s future. Even when they are misled, he believes they should be guided back into the national mainstream, not exploited as cannon fodder for political agendas.

Those obsessed with outrage and political point-scoring may never understand that sentiment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s politics has consistently been about nation-building, not harvesting anger.

If you wish to challenge him, do it on governance, ideas or performance. His record is there for everyone to see.

Manufactured outrage and sanctimonious lectures won’t diminish the stature of a leader who chooses reconciliation over retribution.

The prime minister’s forgiveness may work with the police that might stop chasing them. What about their potential recruiters in the future? The private sector is extremely sensitive to controversies. No reputed company will touch these prospective employees with a barge pole. Trust me, by now, the offensive videos have reached the human resource department of every major company for the screening process.

Every action has a reaction.

Till yesterday, those who were openly abusing and using bad language did not think that they were students, that they had a career, or that their actions could have consequences.

But now, as action has started being taken against them, they are trying to present themselves as victims, saying that they are students and are facing so many problems because of all this.

These things should have been thought about earlier.

When they were using such language, they didn't think about their future or career. Now that action is being taken, everything suddenly comes to mind.

How will this work? If you take responsibility for your actions, you should also be ready to face the consequences.

Smriti Irani should be reinstated as a BJP spokesperson — for one-on-one interactions* with both Indian and foreign media — before the party leadership finds out what more responsibilities she can be entrusted with. She is the best at disarming a hostile anchor.

At the height of the CJP protests, I watched an interview with a BJP spokesman on Sky News. While he put forth cogent arguments, he did not resort to counterattacks, which is the need of the hour. Sometimes, you have to be a Donald Trump, a refined version of the POTUS at least. Call out fake news or skewed news for what it is.
