Hyderabad Lake Heroes -2
Thakur Rajkumar Singh and Hyderabad’s lake fights
For nearly two-and-a-half decades, Thakur Rajkumar Singh has been one of Hyderabad’s persistent voices in the fight to protect lakes, nalas and reservoir catchments. Representing the Human Rights and Consumer Protection Cell Trust, he took up battles involving encroachments, blocked water channels, buffer-zone violations and questionable permissions.
I remember being in touch with him during many of these fights. He would come prepared with papers, survey numbers, maps, locations and a clear sense of what had gone wrong. Many times, his inputs became the starting point for stories on lake encroachments, blocked nalas and shrinking water bodies. He was a source, but more than that, he was a citizen who refused to let these issues disappear.
His work covered Ameenpur Lake and the wider Ameenpur lake system, including Uskebavi Kunta, Pochamma Kunta, Uba Kunta, Shetti Kunta, Patel Cheruvu, Gandi Kunta, Upparivani Kunta, Bandamkommu Cheruvu and Kotha Cheruvu. He also fought on issues linked to Varrakunta in Bollaram and the Tellapur lakes — Vanam Cheruvu, Medla Cheruvu and Chelikunta. In the GO 111 and reservoir catchment matters, he kept the focus on Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, arguing for protection instead of dilution of safeguards.
His contribution was concrete. His petitions and follow-up helped convert local complaints into inspections, official surveys, tribunal scrutiny, cancellation proceedings and written acknowledgments that lake areas had been disturbed, water channels blocked or permissions wrongly issued. In a city where lakes are often remembered only after flooding, people like Thakur Rajkumar Singh kept the fight alive long after the headlines faded. His work shows that lake conservation is not only a government duty; it is also a citizen’s battle fought with patience, evidence and persistence.
